Following Chelsea from 60s I’ve always hated the racism from far 2 many supporters (1 is 2 many). However the 70s & 80s racism was very much anti immigrant, anti BAME fans & players. Thankfully this has reduced recently but antisemitism & use of the Y word has risen alarmingly..1
I have no doubt that the fact that Spurs fans have “claimed” the Y words as a badge of pride (Y-Army etc etc) is a major part of it but sadly political developments, especially the conflating of anti Zionism with antisemitism must also be a factor....2
The right wing has always been antisemitic & pro-Brexiteers are not slow to link the EU to international finance and people like George Soros but in the last 3 years the use of antisemitic tropes, slogans, memes & insults have been commonplace on the left of British politics...3
Those Chelsea fans using the Y word and making hissing noises may not be natural bedfellows with Messrs Livingstone and Corbyn but they must also be picking up the “normalisation” of antisemitic discourse that has blossomed in the last 3 years...4
Finally it’s irrelevant Chelsea have a Jewish owner & he doesn't like to hear antisemitic chanting. Use of antisemitic insults & songs are illegal & must be prosecuted wherever they occur including @ Spurs. I hope both clubs work together to eradicate this starting Tuesday...ENDS
