@KevinRPetty Question from @BrianSmoliak: In your institutions, how do you address less visible aspects of DEI? #AMS2019 #BECP2019
@KevinRPetty @BrianSmoliak .@KevinRPetty: Need to have open dialogue to discuss experiences that minorities have had. Build groups with diversity where people are comfortable in exchanging experiences & ideas.

@KevinRPetty @BrianSmoliak .@profdesai: Sharing experiences increase mindfulness of where changes can be made.

University has created care teams to help professors better understand how to help students & advocate for them.

.@profdesai: A lot of the science discussions at conferences happen at bars at night, which isn't always a comfortable experience, for a number of reasons. Can be hard for people to get ahead when they don't/can't participate in these types of conversations.

@profdesai What can we do to uplift first-generation students? What do we do to stop suppression from faculty on students who are already fragile & unsure? #AMS2019 #BECP2019
@profdesai .@KevinRPetty: I had a diverse network of people I could reach out to & ask how they handled a tough situation with a professor. Important to have that in place. #AMS2019 #BECP2019
@profdesai @KevinRPetty .@Marcia4Science: Universities should not tolerate suppression & reviews should reflect this. Universities can ultimately take action when reviews show that faculty can't work with students & students are avoiding them. #AMS2019 #BECP2019
@profdesai @KevinRPetty @Marcia4Science .@profdesai: Following a lot of diverse scientists on Twitter has opened up a whole network for me. Use lists of both people to follow & people to avoid.

@profdesai @KevinRPetty @Marcia4Science .@profdesai: Money is also a burden that first-generation (& other) students carry. We've found little ways to help students meet basic needs, which can be a limiting factor. We can't forget what we went through.

.@Marcia4Science: Follow-up on sexual harassment study: 1 action item is to find out what is working at institutions to get best practices shared amongst organizations. #AMS2019 #BECP2019
