.@CommDocPA's PhD is in human communication. She works with the @ametsoc about a need for young scientists (or all scientists) to share technical information in a way that others understand & can act on. #AMS2019 #BECP2019
The second most feared thing for Americans is dying. The most feared thing is speaking in public. #AMS2019 #BECP2019
This fear is called communication apprehension. Everyone has it to some extent and it can take on many forms. Fear of speaking in front of groups, or fear of a group dynamic at a party. #AMS2019 #BECP2019
Controlling anxiety is all about controlling your breath. Symptoms can be mitigated by your breathing. Same symptoms of anxiety can be the same symptoms of being in love. Brains, man. #AMS2019 #BECP2019
If you change your breathing, your other symptoms will go away. Hold your diaphragm & breathe in while counting slowly to 5, hold for 5, then out, while counting to 5. This triggers a response in your body that you are controlling. #AMS2019 #BECP2019
.@CommDocPA: There needs to be a clear message in informative speaking. People need time to cognitively process what they're hearing. A single, clear, focused message is ideal. #AMS2019 #BECP2019
.@CommDocPA: professors who are better at lecturing are personable. Allows them to connect with their audience. We need the nerves to calm down so we can be personable when we speak. #AMS2019 #BECP2019
.@CommDocPA: a good talk has an introduction, a body, & an end. Help your audience to feel that they've gotten a whole package from you. Also needs to be a central idea: a single sentence that captures the essence of your talk. #AMS2019 #BECP2019
Occasion, purpose, audience, & topic = OPAT.

3 possible purposes: inform, persuade, to mark an occasion.

Audience: At AMS, where is the right level or scientific literacy?

#AMS2019 #BECP2019
Topic: broad topics should be able to be condensed to a single sentence. This helps you figure out what story to tell on your topic. Storyline matters. #AMS2019 #BECP2019
Think about the order in which you're going to talk about things as a chain that will guide people to your conclusion. Should be a logical order, but try to avoid chronological order unless it's necessary. #AMA2019 #BECP2019
Number of main points should be 2-5. You started with one main idea. Research shows that the magic number is 7+/-2. That's the number of bits of information people can keep in their mind at a time. That number should be lower when people are listening. #AMS2019 #BECP2019
Tough to give up detail when you're excited about a topic. But people remember big ideas, not small details. Can be hard that we can't say everything we know in a single talk. Don't cram or speed up. Audience doesn't know what was left out. #AMS2019 #BECP2019
Refining your grasp over the tool of language is vital. Do this by reading. This will help you expand your vocabulary. #AMS2019 #BECP2019
.@CommDocPA: technology. Not saying don't use PowerPoint, but figure how to use it well. Image based, not word based. When people are reading words on a screen, they're not processing what you're saying. #AMS2019 #BECP2019
Lastly, rehearse rehearse rehearse. Great talk on how to become a better presentater from @CommDocPA. #AMS2019 #BECP2019
