THREAD: #Rwanda, is it the best choice?

As we have all had had time to mull over the extraordinary revelations from last week, we thought it might be now a good time to dissect through some of the issues
This thread will focus on Rwanda in relation to the #PritiPatel deal. 1/
Most of you will have heard of #Rwanda from "Hotel Rwanda" a film that tells a bit about the Genocide that happened in the country in 1994 - in 100 days between April-July - >800,000 Tutsi people were killed in a national Genocide.
Rwanda has been rebuilding itself ever since. 2/
Why is it important that we dissect this deal from the #Rwanda angle?

Well put simply - its because the British gov #BorisJohnson #PritiPatel are deliberately not telling you, if they did, most Britons would be appalled & disgusted at how bad the scheme is for RW & refugees. 3/

Let’s get this clear.

#RwandaMigrationPlan has been labelled a breach of international law by the #UnitedNations

It also wasn’t costed. So, rightly, because of illegality & failure to cost - the #CivilService refused to implement. This resulted in @pritipatel issuing ….
…. a ‘ministerial direction’. Which means she personally takes responsibility for anything going wrong.

If it goes wrong & she’s sued the taxpayer pays the cost. The ministerial code is overseen by @BorisJohnson - so she won’t get the push as he wanted her to do it.

#Racism
2/2
So, if it goes ahead, we have a breach of international law & the taxpayer pays for it & she won’t loose her ministerial job despite accepting personal responsibility.

On top of this, the policy would be checked out by @SuellaBraverman a lawyer. She won’t stand down ….

"Britain is a nation that’s changed night and day since 2016. It was a quiet, prosperous nation that became a haven for Right-wing populists, a breeding ground for racism, and a hub for misinformation. None of which is a coincidence."
"It’s the byproduct of nationalism, racism, and demagoguery. And if it sounds similar to post-2016 America, that’s because it is. Both countries began their ascent down the black hole of authoritarianism at the same time for a reason."

The situation in the #NHS is as bad as I’ve ever known it.

Multiple HCWs in our area are off sick with #COVID - nurses, consultants, GPs…all likely to be triple vaxed so they should avoid serious illness but still a risk of #LongCovid.

The impact on ALL HEALTHCARE is HUGE!
1/9
Operations, procedures, investigations, treatments, therapies….are delayed & cancelled every single day.

Waits for urgent care in A+E/UTCs is ⬆️, pressure on the ambulance service⬆️.

Care ACROSS the #NHS is being negatively affected by staff absences & a lack of beds.
2/
Care in some areas is no longer safe, in many it can only be described as ‘adequate’.

As @RachaelMaskell points out, hospitalisations are ⬆️….A LOT! Even admissions for other problems will be made more challenging if the patient has #COVID19.

Yet @sajidjavid does nothing?!

My 1st cancer mutation erupted 2017, a 2nd eruption mid pandemic 2020. Every aspect of my personal life, health, my home, savings, possessions and income went into The C

The stats predict 1 in 2 people will get #cancer, my local #Tory MP & NHS know I’ve been homeless for 2 years
Not once have they offered me £350 with my housing costs, covid financially ruined my chances of housing myself and why I’m living in a motorhome fighting two genetic cancers and wrestling with three different councils and the nhs for help and support, they all know
That since 2017 my mental health has been battered by cancer and its after effects, I was self employed at the time and living my best life, worked hard and contributed to the government since 1985. Covid finished my finances off after paying for scans, a victim of business fraud

1/ Thread on why #Labour is on course to lose and what it's current trajectory and strategy suggests for its future:

It's tiny lead is declining, suggesting, as many of us have explained previously, support is soft. The softness of #Labour support is a feature of "strategy"...
2/ #Starmer wants to win over former #Tory voters alienated by #Johnson's more than usually explicit corruption. As #Corbyn was aware (and demonstrated more effectively than Miliband and Brown) , winning an election requires expanding #Labour's supporter base...
3/ But this isn't what #Starmer is doing. His strategy seems to be based more on out of date 1990s dogma than actual electoral politics. It assumes that swing voters won't be attracted to #Labour if they percieve it to be "too left wing"...

This raises the questions: "Who would investigate the 'concerns raised'" and "Does No 10 not consider it relevant to question alleged actions of Whips?"
"He added: “I think the claims have been unsubstantiated, as the prime minister said, he hadn’t seen any evidence. I haven’t seen any evidence of this. Any allegation of that seriousness should be looked into and would have consequences if it is found to be true.”"

1/10 #BREXIT – A LONG VIEW IN A SHORT THREAD: The EU (previously the EEC or Common Market) was the lifeboat that Britain jumped into (very enthusiastically) after the Empire sank and the prospects for further exploitation of our former colonies receded. #Max12to1
2/10 Any good history of Britain post-WW2 (e.g. Ben Pimlott’s biography of Harold Wilson 👇 – highly recommended) shows how fundamentally shattered the British economy was after 1945. We have never really recovered. #Max12to1 goodreads.com/book/show/1756…
3/10 The economy lurched from crisis to crisis under both #Tory and #Labour govts, with the balance of payments in particular disarray as we struggled to come to terms with the over-valuing of our currency in a world that now looked to the mighty dollar instead. #Max12to1

#PrimeMinister do you really understand the seriousness & gravity of what you’ve done?

You have today signed the unnecessary death warrants of 1000s of innocent ppl & consigned many 1000s of others to long term debilitating illness.🧵
@BorisJohnson @10DowningStreet @sajidjavid
2-Despite the determination to use a #RideTheWave analogy…

THIS IS NOT A GAME!

The lives (& avoidable deaths) of ordinary people may not bother you #PrimeMinister but they do bother my #NHS colleagues & I, & it pains us not to be able to care for people appropriately & safely.
3-The #NHS is NOT “in danger of being overwhelmed”

IT IS OVERWHELMED RIGHT NOW!

How anyone w/ even an iota of understanding of healthcare can’t see, that for ppl having an MI or other v serious event the need to make their own way to 🏥 is both UNSAFE & UNACCEPTABLE!

Mr Javid, I read your @DailyMailUK article w/ interest🧐

The word that keeps popping up in discussions on whether the #NHS is/will be overwhelmed is ‘THRESHOLD’.

As a HCW I am keen to understand what the THRESHOLD for increasing PROTECTIONS is?

Is it the number of patients in intensive care units?

We all welcome the news that #Omicron appears to be causing less severe disease but hospital admissions for #COVID19 are clearly rising & this will still affect the ability to provide safe non-COVID care.

Good evening #PrimeMinister,

How’s that number crunching going?

Have you seen the up to date figures on #NHS staff sickness in London?

What are yours thoughts on the sustainability of healthcare in the capital over the next few weeks?

@BorisJohnson @sajidjavid

What about cases Mr Johnson..Are you pleased w/ how case numbers are rising?

119,789 is without doubt a WORLD BEATING NUMBER so I guess you must be proud?

In fact the number of ppl who’ll be forced to isolate this #Christmas is truly SPECTACULAR 👏!

#Covid19UK @DHSCgovuk
2/
And hospitalisations?

1,004 today alone.
6,299 in the last 7 days….!

That’s going to hit hospitals very hard especially as more #NHS staff go off sick w/ or due to #COVID.

Would you want to spend #Christmas in hospital, ill & afraid with no visitors?

@EUMarauder sums up our desperate & dangerous situation v well.

This particular #Tory govt want our money, it’s as simple as that!

They want us in shops, bars, restaurants…travelling, spending, drinking & eating.

@BorisJohnson @10DowningStreet @Conservatives @RishiSunak ImageImage
How many of us die, get long term debilitating symptoms or are bereaved in the process is irrelevant!

They desperately don’t want us to be frightened by realising just how much risk they are willing to put us in by their #WilfulNegligence.

@DeborahMeaden @JolyonMaugham
The fact that they’re ENCOURAGING schools to do nativity plays/Christmas concerts says it all.
Mixing old & young, laughing & singing in packed schools halls - the perfect environment to spread both #COVID variants widely.

🧵PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH, OR CHANGE YOUR SPEECH?🦠

A long-standing Tory MP has backed the idea of imposing lockdowns on unvaccinated people only.

Today, as all robust democracies should be free to do, I challenge these extreme views and expose a catalogue of rank hypocrisy👇🏻
Sir Gary Streeter — @garystreeterSWD — is the longest-serving MP in Devon and Cornwall and served as a junior minister under John Major’s Conservative Government.

In December 2018, it was announced that Streeter would receive a knighthood in the 2019 New Year Honours List.
13 days ago, Streeter caused consternation when he reacted to an article which said EU member Austria was “considering a Covid lockdown for the unvaccinated only.”

It outlines a scenario where unvaccinated people would only be allowed to leave their homes for “specific reasons”.

On Dec 12th 2019 I cried.

Every #Tory MP who signed up to #GetBrexitDone” however utterly sh*t it was, at THAT MOMENT, sealed our fate.

Personal ambition & greed trumped any sense of public duty or responsibility.

ANYTHING @BorisJohnson wanted to do was made possible.

@Jeremy_Hunt & @sajidjavid , I’m a 55yr old PART-TIME GP, working in A+E & UTCs, working ~25hrs per week.
