No stigma, huh, @PrisonPlanet? Then perhaps you’ll be able to answer these questions for me, considering your deep and thorough knowledge and understanding of the subject. /1
If there is ‘no stigma’ attached to mental illness and depression, why is suicide the second-biggest killer worldwide of a demographic notoriously reluctant to discuss their feelings  - young people, aged 15-29 - after road accidents? /2 who.int/mental_health/…
If there is ‘no stigma’ attached to mental illness and depression, why are British men *three times* more likely than women to kill themselves, with the most represented being men in their forties and fifties - a supposedly very stoic demographic? /3 samaritans.org/about-us/our-r…
If there is ‘no stigma’ attached to mental illness and depression, why did nine out of ten users of mental health services in a 2011 UK survey feel that they have were discriminated against in the course of seeking treatment? /4 cambridge.org/core/product/5…
If there is ‘no stigma’ attached to mental illness and depression, why does study after study such as this reveal the media overwhelmingly portrays mental illness in negative, sensationalised terms? /5 ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
The fact of the matter is that there remains a concerted effort to get people talking about their mental health in a way that is productive, helpful & that does not open them up to abuse from those around them. It’s a hell of a challenge, hence the number of groups involved. /6
To be honest here, I wasted years of my life suffering from anxiety and depression, because of macho reactionary bullshit that suggests it's just a mindset thing, that talking about how I felt was a weakness. That was Australia in the 2000s. /7
To this day, a fair deal of the crap that gets flung back at me here often takes my own experience of mental health issues and turns it into an indicator of weakness. How is that *not* stigma? /8
It may be easier to ignore this, @PrisonPlanet, but you have an audience of almost a million here & over a million on YouTube. For some reason, you’re listened to. It is almost criminally irresponsible to go telling your young audience that mental health stigma isn’t real. /9
You’re not a psychologist, you’re not a psychiatrist, you’re not a professional. You’re a cynical YouTube reactionary who sells soy pills for a living. Don’t fool yourself you have any insight into the situation, when your go-to guy on this is a failed kickboxer. /10
Stick to misrepresenting news stories on Muslims or gently tonguing Jair Bolsonaro’s loafers, @PrisonPlanet. Arguably, the closet fascist schtick is less harmful to your audience. For the love of God, keep your mug out of the conversation on mental health. Please. /FIN
