Wonderful day spent in St Peter's Basilica & Square, and the Holy See
The interior of St Peter's Basilica, which was designed by Michelangelo and Bernini, and built between 1506 and 1626. It was built on the site of an earlier St Peter's, which was built over the tomb of St Peter the Apostle, the first Pope.
The altar and canopy/baldachin designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, which was built between 1623 and 1634. The columns were designed to resemble those built for Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem.
Michelangelo's "Pieta" (1498-1499) depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary holding the lifeless body of Jesus after he had been brought down from the Cross.
Memorial to Pope Pius IX, one of the great Popes, erected, fittingly, over a statue of St Peter.
Pope Gregory XVI, a Pope (1831-1846) who I admire greatly, as he tried to deal with the various social questions raised by the Napoleonic wars, the deplorable rise of European liberalism, and the pernicious effects of the industrial revolution.
St Pius X (1903-1914) who did so much to make the modern Church and yet who was an implacable opponent of Modernism and like novelties. No one did more to prevent the Church being captured by the indifferent ideas that have destroyed so many protestant churches
Pope Benedict XV (1914-1922) was the Pope during the Great War and he worked tirelessly to end this destructive war without annexations and recriminations. He also did much to opposed communism and build relations with the Orthodox and Anglican communions. A very wise Pope.
The tomb of the Stuart Kings and Princes of the United Kingdom (note the Lion and the Unicorn at the top of the tomb). The tomb includes the remains of King James II, King James III (the Old Pretender), Bonnie Prince Charlie, and Prince Henry Stuart, who later became a Cardinal
Tomb of St John Paul II
Tomb of St Peter the Apostle and first Pope
Exterior of St Peter's Basilica in St Peter's Square, featuring the obelisk, which had stood in Nero's circus where so many of the early Christians were martyred.
Statute outside St Peter's Basilica of Saint Gregory the Illuminator (257-331), who is the patron saint and was the first official head of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
Water fountain outside St Peter's that references Ez 47:1: "Then He brought me back to the door of the temple; and behold, water was issuing from below the threshold of the temple..."
The St Peter's Jubilee Door that is opened every 25 years by the Pope to mark a Jubilee Year - while Leviticus 25:10 provides for every 50 years, the Church marks a Jubilee Year every 25 years
A little noticed plaque above the entry to St Peter's that marks the dialogue between Pope John Paul II and Demetrios I the Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople
A final look back at St Peter's Square from the Basilica...."Urbi et Orbi"
