Look. We all know what's happening. But admitting it means that one also has to admit that the GOP is a bad-faith operator willing to trade US sovereignty for rolling back the New Deal and Civil Rights movement, and also admitting our society is racist enough for that to work.

So instead we're stuck in some bizarro discourse where things are like they've always been, just louder and tackier, as opposed to what's really the case--the whole thing is going off the rails, and the right-wing minority is gleefully cheering that process along.

Mainstream politics and its media adjuncts were, and continue to be, singularly unequipped to deal with the reality that our governing paradigm--which was under assault since Reagan--has been completely broken. Yet we're still trying to understand our reality using that paradigm.

These are not disagreements over mere policy matters. There is no consensus about ends with just disagreements over means. There is a Right-wing rump that's decided to roll back the 21st century, along with much of the 20th. And there are that rump's opponents. Full stop.

And yet there will be people surprised when this whole mess breaks wide open."How did we miss this?" they'll ask. "How did we not know the extent of the plot?" And those are the people who should never get paid to write about politics again.
