Mathew Brady, Civil War photographer, died #OnThisDay in 1896.

Brady opened his own studio in New York in 1844, and photographed Andrew Jackson, John Quincy Adams, and Abraham Lincoln, among other public figures.
During the war, Brady spent over $100,000 to create over 10,000 plates. He expected the US government to buy the photographs when the war ended. When the government refused to do so he was forced to sell his New York City studio and go into bankruptcy.
Congress granted Brady $25,000 in 1875, but he remained deeply in debt. The public was unwilling to dwell on the gruesomeness of the war after it had ended, and so private collectors were scarce.
Depressed by his financial situation and loss of eyesight, and devastated by the death of his wife in 1887, he died penniless in the charity ward of Presbyterian Hospital in New York City from complications following a streetcar accident.

1. My colleague Richard Ellis and I edited this collection of essays which will be published in April. Much of the work was completed before our current President had much of a chance to reveal his historian's chops. upress.virginia.edu/title/5279
2. But I was just reminded of this series of tweets from Trump's Inaugural which offered up little tidbits of information on past presidents. They reveal an interesting, MAGA-inflected take, on American history. For example, Madison was a shrimp, while Lincoln was bigly.
3. Note also that the Civil War "saved the union." The absence of the word slavery in relation to Lincoln seems, um, like an odd oversight, if not intentional. Also, Madison was known for his deep erudition and his patient intelligence, not his "mightiness."

On This Day, 1824: The disputed presidential election was given to the House of Representatives to resolve. There were four candidates —Andrew Jackson, John Quincy Adams, William Crawford and Henry Clay—but none won a majority of electoral votes (required by 12th Amendment)

Jackson had gotten the most electoral votes but did not have a majority of them; the House eventually gave the presidency to Adams. Jackson got hs revenge in 1828
On This Day, 1834: Andrew Jackson said the federal government was once again debt free. In his State of the Union address—delivered by mail to Congress—the president said the Treasury had a surplus on $6.7 million. Jackson hated debt; calling it a curse and a "a moral failing.”

New: Transcript from the May 16 hearing on the Special Counsel's Russian
troll case.

Biggest takeaway: Special Counsel Rhee is a passive aggressive liar.
Court starts by addressing discovery.

Rhee states there is "1.5 to 2 terabytes of data, covering hundreds of facilities that compromise the defendant's operational accounts."
"Hundreds of facilities"? Wow. Sounds serious.

Like those top secret Cold War bunkers in the frozen Soviet Union with ICBMs pointed at New York or DC or wherever.

Right?

1) Small thread on the growth of government. No, it doesn't necessarily occur the way you think.

2) Until the 1820s, government as a share of the population grew VERY slowly. Part of this was bias against "big government." But there was something else at work.
3) In 1820, we literally had a revolution. The Missouri Compromise put slavery on the road to extinction by virtue of how it said states could enter the Union.

See that big blue chunk? MO Compromise said all states in that chunk HAD to enter the Union as free states.
But all the states below the 36 degree 30 minute line could CHOOSE to be free or slave (really, only Oklahoma).

4) This meant that over time a number of states would enter the Union as free states and at most one---or none---would be added to the list of slave states.
