The backstop annexes NI into "the" EU's customs territory, separated from the rest of the UK. It's hidden away under layers of reference, but it is clear when you analyse the text. /1
A "bare bones" customs union creating a "single customs territory" is formed between EU customs territory (including NI) and the UK (excluding NI). This is really a bare bones customs union between GB on one side and EU+NI on the other. /2

1. For whatever my faults, I have always tried to give you my most honest assessment of the facts as I understand them. I am still of the view that no deal is a disaster. There's a lot of histrionics about but it's not all project fear. #Brexit thread
2. The reason many of you think that warnings are project fear is because the media has only really half understood the implications and will routinely misreport or sensationalise - and usually trivialise. And then some of it is just nasty propaganda.
3. All I can really recommend is to stop allowing yourself to be manipulated by both sides and do the legwork yourself. It isn't difficult - and unlike hacks, because you live in the real world, you have a better chance of contextualising it.

Firstly, with regret, no chance it could be negotiated in 18 months, when CETA itself took 8 years from launch to implementation. We'd need a longer transition period 2/
Next, can we achieve full tariff and quota free trade? What is stated as an ambition is typically not fully achieved in a trade agreement, but it is certainly possible that there would be no tariffs or quotas in an EU-UK free trade agreement 3/

FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS AND BREXIT (thread):

Membership of the EU Customs Union prevents countries from agreeing their own trade agreements. Instead, the EU negotiates trade agreements on behalf of its member countries, which must be ratified by each state. /1
If the UK leaves the Customs Union, it will be free to negotiate its own trade agreements.

A number of studies have estimated the gains from trade agreements with third countries. The expected effects are small relative to the fall in trade from leaving the EU. /2
The Government analysis leaked by @BuzzFeedUK predicts that a new trade deal with USA would add 0.2% to long run GDP compared with a Brexit cost to GDP of up to 8%.
