I’ve been thinking a lot about the attack in Nairobi & the decision by some places to publish gruesome photos of bullet-ridden bodies. It’s a reminder that some bodies exist as a spectacle of death while simultaneously being deemed unworthy of mourning, undeserving of empathy.
So often large acts of violence in the Global South don’t get the public attention they deserve (in the US), & oftentimes when they do get attention, it is in the form of images & language that would rarely, if ever, be used to describe the death of ppl who aren’t black or brown
I wrote about this a couple years ago, and think about the issue often:
