Sobering thought: Everyone I’ve seen defend the Covington students has at least some social incentive to do so. Either they’re Catholic, conservative, MAGA, or they have some friends and followers who are. I have yet to see anyone completely act against their interests.
This is the real test. What happens when your mob comes for someone who is part of a group or phenomenon you and everyone you know disagrees with, but who is still being treated unjustly? Do you speak up, knowing that (in this life) there’s only a downside for you?
For example, I wonder how many of those on the right defending Covington students will later defend Muslims when they are slandered. (I do it, but I spend most of my time around Muslims so it’s not really a sacrifice for me to do so.)
