Ok, so it turns out the #Covington kids might have been riled up by the other group of black demonstrators close to them. THAT SAID............
1. Why did the ADULT chaperones with the #Covington students not move them to a different spot? That's kinda their job in such situations.
2. In what way does that excuse the confrontational tactic employed by the boy in the viral video? If you want to claim the high road, then TAKE the high road.
3. Spare me the "They were engaging with #NathanPhillips and chanting along and dancing" attempt at defending them. Look at the video. They're doing the Tomahawk and their chants and dancing were clearly mocking gestures.
4. I don't think these #Covington minors should be named, but shaming is definitely in order. Not out of spite over political differences, but simply because (and here's a novel concept) IT WAS A SHAMEFUL DISPLAY!
5. In what world are practicing, conscientious, and devout Catholics actually OK with sporting MAGA hats on group outings?
6. To be clear, the group of black protestors were exercising their own 1A rights. I've watched the video. Yes, they were profane and loud. I am not excusing them - but they're not the issue. Attempting to make them the focus now is also symptomatic of the problem.
7. #NathanPhillips and the other Native Americans accompanying him did in fact walk up to the students. They did not do so in a confrontational manner. It takes quite a leap to presume that watching the video.
8. It is NOT, however, a leap to guess that a man with his history of advocacy and seeking to build bridges entered the fray in an attempt to de-escalate. He's also got a history of working with youth, so it makes sense he gravitated to the #Covington students.
9. Also to be clear, as one who has planned, led, and chaperoned lots of church and school outings: #Covington adults, you failed. I don't care what your politics are. This was an abject leadership failure.
