Okay, as long as everyone is making up their own narratives about this event, let me tell you what I think happened, from what I've seen and read. 1/
Punk-ass kids arrive at Memorial to hang out. They end up watching the black Israelite group, that ends up throwing some shit their way. 2/
Most people, getting yelled at by angry people, know the smart thing is to just shrug it off. But elite white boys have lived their whole lives believing that black people are inferior, and their ego will literally not let them back down from these "inferior" people. 3/
Nathan Philips, seeing the escalation, tries to step in between the groups and basically cause a distraction. This would be a good point for the kids to sincerely celebrate his music. However... 4/
... their interpretation is that the uppity black people are being backed up by the uppity native guy, because naturally all minorities are a monolithic bloc to them. So they turn their rage on Philips, who is calm throughout. 5/
So it is a conflict that is sparked by racism, escalated by racism, and exacerbated by viewing *all* actions through race. And, of course, being a big group of privileged white kids who have never been challenged by anyone but their parents. 6/
Where were the chaperones? Well, I'm not feeling particularly charitable, so I assume they were distracted ogling the young boys who took off their shirts at the confrontation. Fuck all of them. FIN/
PS I've seen folks say that the kids look a little scared in some parts of the video, therefore they are the victims. Fuck no. Almost everyone is scared in potentially violent confrontations, even ones they start. Bank robbers are scared. That means nothing.
