Thread.

There were really good answers to the tweet suggesting that "algorithms can't be racist because they are math", so I made a top 10.

Let's jump in.

1/ My personal favorite is Dr. @mathbabedotorg's, the world's expert on the topic, and yet her answer is benevolent and humble:

2/ Google's deep learning expert @fchollet's answer generalizes the argument of @RealSaavedra into the concept of "bias laundering", which I bet will come back often in the next years:

3/ Dr @EricRWeinstein, managing director at Thiel Capital, is not exactly an @AOC's fan, but still took the time to defend her on mathematics. Plus, he raised the important issue that unbiasing will have biases too:

6/ @chrisinsilico's answer was a bit too aggressive for my taste, but makes good points. Extra points for being a whistle blower who worked on gaming these precise algorithms:

8/ @ohhoe made a personalized machine learning video to demonstrate the issue: (maybe not the most convincing answer, but lots of points for originality)

10/ @firefox also answered. TFW your browser takes the time to tell you that you're mistaken on @Twitter:

This might be the first time I see mathematicians winning the information war on twitter
