The army could be sent to back up security at the Irish border if negotiators screw up Brexit, Irish PM Leo Varadkar just told @BloombergTV
Leo Varadkar tells @flacqua and @tomkeene what a hard border means: "It would involve customs posts. It would involve people in uniform and it may involve the need, for example, for cameras, physical infrastructure, possibly a police presence, or an army presence to back it up."
More from Varadkar: "The problem with that in the context of Irish politics and history is those things become targets - and we've already had a certain degree of violence in the last few weeks. I just don't want to see that come back."

Graham Brady hasn’t requested a meeting with Theresa May tomorrow, despite reports that he’s asking to see her to tell her she will face a confidence vote, a source tells us.
All Sir Graham Brady himself is saying tonight is this: “If she wanted to see me, I would of course make myself available.”
None of this means that he won’t ask to see her tomorrow. Or that the 48 letters are not in.

BREXIT LATEST: Cabinet trouble gets worse for May... Andrea Leadsom is convening a working group of five Cabinet Brexiteers to re-write the Brexit deal, sources say. Gove, Fox, Mordaunt, Grayling, and Leadsom... They're meeting through next week
Coordinated action from these five Brexiteers suggests they want to change the draft Brexit agreement so that they can stay in government and vote for it when the time comes. But if they can't....
Another mass Cabinet walk out seems likely in the run up to the Meaningful Vote.

As a remainer I scratch my head as to why #Brexit continues to enjoy significant support despite overwhelming evidence its a really bad idea so thought I'd offer a psychological explanation for its appeal to some of its supporters which simply cannot lie in objective reality
I have no knowledge experience or professional qualifications in psychology whatsoever but as this is #brexit Britain this means I know more than professionals like @RichardBentall so offer my brexpertise on the psychological appeal of Brexit confident in my total ignorance
Being a Brexiter means being part of a huge crowd where not only are you all cheering for the same thing but this crowd permits and even encourages behaviour and attitudes which are normally forbidden and some brexiters at least feel liberated from decency and reason

So the wheels have hit tarmac on one of the key #brexit conundrums:
Everyone is working so hard to find a deal that avoids a hard border in Ireland.. but if they fail, and there is ‘no deal’, then by default, there is a hard border. The @EU_Commission finally spelt that out today
Here is what EU Commission Spokesman @MargSchinas said on the issue - 🎥
The spokesman is drawing the logical conclusion to the argument of those proposing that the #Brexit deal *must* include a ‘backstop’ to avoid a hard border: that if there if there is ‘no deal’, then a hard Irish border is unavoidable.

The ERG hates the backstop. They want a unilateral exit clause - but the more they talk about that, the more the EU and Irish are going to cling to the need for a backstop that guarantees no return to a hard border. /2
@theresa_may But let us say, for sake of argument, that the ERG gets its way.

The brave new PM (Raab, Boris, DD or whoever) rides into Brussels with an ultimatum: it's the deal-minus-backstop, or No deal.

And against all the odds and predictions of smart alecs like me, the EU caves... /3

1) EU leaders sticking to their sombre tone at #Brexit summit. Not happy UK leaving
2) At same time they’re trying to help the PM sell her deal back home. EU chief negotiator Barnier called it an unprecedented, ambitious partnership. Dutch PM Rutte said the PM ‘fought hard’ in negotiations and that it’s a ‘good deal’
3) Of course EU realises the deal may not pass through U.K. parliament but EU leaders today underlined, whatever happened, they would not fundamentally change the deal on offer. EU Commission President Juncker spelled this out particularly clearly

I'm currently at this #Brexit conference in Copenhagen, where the British ambassador and several #DExEU officials will be on panels with representatives of Danish trade and security. It'll be very interesting to see what's said, especially in light of May's recent Munich speech.
And now that I'm not desperately trying to keep up with livetweeting it, I shall turn my mess of self-retweets into a proper thread. #Brexit #BrexitDK
