Only two forces can inflict greater damage than a tsunami: collision with an asteroid, or nuclear explosion. The water draws (even inland waters) emptying the natural noise in the area, before it crashes as a wave of destruction. It spares nothing destroying all in its path.
Here I was using "Sayanora" like the "Gaijin" I was.. 
With so much death, there was a shortage of coffins to bury the bodies found. More, there was a shortage of ice to preserve the bodies. Families didn't have time to grieve but put efforts towards preserving them burial. That is if you were lucky to find your loved ones.
A tsunami can traverse the seas. So an earthquake can trigger it from one region (like Chile) and it lands in Japan. (Like in 1960). In 2012, a study believes than earthquake and tsunami near the Nankai Trough (near Tokyo) could take 323,000 lives (more than the atomic bombs).
