In the wake of another TGIFederal Indictment Friday, an open letter to my parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces & nephews, all of whom -- save one brother's family -- voted for Trump. (thread)

Hey extended family -

We're two years into Trump's presidency, and to say that a lot has happened is putting it mildly. I'm still flabbergasted and horrified that so many people I love voted for Trump, and I'd like to know where you stand in light of recent events.

Trump contradicts all the values I thought you held - humility, modesty, frugality, compassion, fidelity, common sense, tolerance. That you were willing to put all that aside and vote for him makes me worried that you are not so committed to these ideals as I believed.

On top of all that, he's totally incompetent, which I assumed you already knew based on the legacy of his casinos and airline and magazine and steaks and football league and vodka and .....

And now, on the same day Mr. Art of the Deal caves on his wall shutdown having gained exactly nothing, his long-time political advisor is indicted for lying to Congress. Repeatedly. With texts and emails helpfully included in the indictment to prove it.

Trump's campaign manager is in prison, his lawyer is headed there, and indictments have been filed against his national security advisor and whatever the hell Roger Stone is doing here (plus a few others). I think it's safe to say it's not "that Russia nonsense" anymore.

This legal battle will likely grow into one of the most cataclysmic events in our country's history. The future of this nation could depend on old-school moderate Reagan Republicans like you giving the correct answer to one simple question:

Who are you gonna believe: the 3-times married, repeatedly bankrupt, crass, incompetent, "real estate mogul" from reality TV who you have found completely awful since the 80s, didn't want to vote for, and is clearly not qualified to lead this country?

...or the guy who TOOK DOWN ENRON AND GOTTI. A former war hero and law enforcement legend who fights against cheats and crooks. Who is bringing you the unfortunate news that the guy you voted for, "Individual-1," is a cheat and a crook. (I know. I'm shocked, too)

I'm sorry, but you got conned. A fraudster claimed to have the solution to all your trouble. Right here in River City. With a capital T and that rhymes with C and that stands for Conspiracy. (Because there's no such legal term as collusion, so please just don't even)

But unlike Harold Hill, this conman doesn't have a heart of gold, Melania certainly ain't Marian madam librarian, and a bad rendition of Beethoven's Minuet in G is not quite as big a deal as how fucked this country is right now.

(Unless you're happy with disastrous tariffs, ballooning deficits, pissing off allies, cozying up to dictators, no health care plan, and shutting down the entire government for a month over a wall that you can't seriously believe was really going to happen.)

Remember how you didn't even like Trump? Didn't you want Mario? or was it Jeb!? You even told me you suspected "the Democrats" and "the media" conspired to make him the nominee because he'd be easy to beat.

Well, you were right about it being a conspiracy.

A foreign adversary hacked into the DNC's servers to interfere with our election. And the path from there to public release of the stolen emails was through his campaign. And while that was taking place, the same foreign adversary was weaponizing your social media against you.

I'm not on facebook, but I saw some of the stuff you shared each other leading up to that election. It's going to be evidence in this legal battle. The images were likely created by people hired by the Kremlin, whose intent was to feed you a steady diet of fear and anger.

And Trump was either directly involved or at the very least didn't try to stop it. All because he wanted to build a hotel in Moscow with his daughter's name on the spa. Or he's a sick fuck and Putin has proof. I don't know, but it's treason.

This is much worse than any fears you were fed about Hillary's charitable foundation, or Uranium One, or Benghazi, or her private email server. Much much much worse. It's pretty clear he's removing sanctions and undoing international agreements at Putin's behest.

So who you gonna believe? I can try to look past our other political disagreements and talk about mundane, safe, inconsequential crap like sports, but not if, when the shit hits the fan, you buy the bullshit about a "witch hunt" from a conman you don't even like.

Trump is a criminal, who hired (and is the father of) several other criminals. None of them should be above the law.

Let him go. Please. You have to, for the sake of our country.

(A bonus would be if you would also get angry at the toadies in your party who have enabled him ever since this started. As in ... might also have possible business incentives or might also be sick fucks? Who knows.)
