FWIW, I'd love to see more emphasis on biblical literary in public education. The stories of the Bible have shaped our world in countless ways. The problem is...
...Because the American church has done such a poor job of teaching the Bible as a library of sacred stories rooted in specific literary, cultural, and religious contexts, most high school teachers are unprepared to teach it as literature & to face parental backlash for doing so.

This. I’m sick of people intentionally mischaracterizing what the man said and, worst of all, relentlessly defaming the very real mothers and very real families and very real doctors who have had to navigate these rare and heartbreaking circumstances themselves. Just stop it.
Like, the merits of the bill are certainly up for debate. You can make the case that the terms were too open-ended. But you can do that without accusing its supporters of advocating infanticide. They’re not.
I've been on the receiving end of these bad-faith arguments for years. When I wrote a piece in 2016 arguing that strengthening the social safety net helps reduce the abortion rate, a major conservative publication claimed I believe "babies are better off dead than poor"...

1/ The additional footage certainly seems to nuance the backstory behind what happened with the Covington students and Nathan Phillips. But it doesn't change the smirk or the jeering, or the MAGA hats, which many of us consider a symbol of intimidation and white supremacy...
...But my view of things is colored by my bias. And I freely admit, I am biased against this president. I am biased against a man who uses "Pocahontas" as a slur, who oppresses immigrants & refugees, who lies & bullies, & who treats women (in his words) "like shit"...
...And I'm biased against images of smirking white men in MAGA hats. Because I associate it with what we saw in Charlottesville and what I've witnessed in my own life these last two years....

Trump has given us the largest deficit in US history, adding trillions via tax cuts. And now he wants to add billions more for a wall when there are more efficient & less expensive security options. How are “fiscal conservatives” rationalizing this? I genuinely don’t understand.
Like, what is it about this guy that makes people totally abandon their principles? Evangelicals went from being the most concerned about a president’s personal morality to the least. Libertarians are supporting massive executive overreach....
The Law & Order folks are slamming the FBI and calling cooperating witnesses “rats.” Guys who remember the Cold War are shrugging off Russian interference in our elections. It’s surreal.

1. Someone recently mistook me for a Jordan Peterson “supporter” because I tweeted something complimentary about him, so I thought I would do a thread with my thoughts on him. I would call myself more Peterson-curious.
2. I’ve been following his controversies and meteoric rise since late November 2016 after he made international news for his opposition to Canada’s Bill C-16.

Starting my journey into political activism on the far left as a students unionist before ending up somewhere in the middle helped me to understand many things about capitalism as well as political leadership and government.

This case of Lagos is a time-bomb that will explode.
That journey took a turn when after watching Fashola in 2010 on television one day declare arrogantly that “there are no low cost cement bags or iron rods and so there can be no low-cost housing”.

I immediately looked up gubernatorial candidates in Lagos and found @BOGbadamosi.
Karl Marx’s book - Das Kapital - is a critique of the political economy of capitalism that ends with a proposal that socialism is the best form of political economy across the world.

If you suspend his conclusion though, you will find that Marx actually redefined capitalism.

1. I recently learned that my great-granddad, Amos Spears, was a student at the Cherokee Male Seminary from 1892-1896. As a Cherokee Nation educational institution it was radically different from Canadian residential schools of the period, and the differences are illuminating.
2. Here’s a thread on Indigenous vs. settler education, and an interesting history lesson that puts the lie to claims that Canada’s Indian residential school system was ever intended to truly educate Indigenous students. I'm looking at two contexts in the same period: 1890s.
3. The Cherokee Male and Female Seminaries were envisioned by Cherokee Nation leaders as sites of advanced education that would train future leaders in the Nation and prepare them to succeed on equal footing with Whites in the political, religious, cultural, and economic spheres.
