The hate crime on Jussie Smollett is not an isolated event. Hate crimes against LGBTQ people increased 17% in 2017 according to the FBI's recent report. 2018's stats will be worse.

And LGBTQ people of color are especially vulnerable to this violence, particularly trans women of color. Don't let them frame this as a random instance. It is systemic, and it is a constant threat to all of us.
Hey, I went back to check, and I got this stat wrong. It's actually worse: it turns hate crimes OVERALL increased by 17 percent in 2017 and anti-LGBTQ hate crimes increased by about 6.5 percent.
Of course, it's also possible to say that in Jussie Smollett's case, there's an intersection of bigotry in many hate crimes, and including race, queer folks of color actually are far closer to that 17% than the 6.5% for white LGBTQ folks.
