When I worked in Congress, first 6 months we aided numerous immigration cases, incl int’l adoptions, got a solder out of trouble for going AWOL to be at custody hearing to get her kid, helped another donate a kidney to his mom, & got a dog from Iraq for family of a fallen soldier
Constituent services is part of the job of being in Congress. It’s unlikely it gets many if any votes. But you do it. It can have a profound effect on the life of a person, a family, a neighborhood if you do good constituent service. It can have a profound effect if you don’t.
If you’re looking for an excuse for not having a district operation up & running & helping constituents in early January, stop. It’s an insult to the people of any congressional district to suggest their member of Congress shouldn’t focus on serving their needs.
If you want to vote against reopening the gov’t bc it would fund ICE, fine, whatever. But at least have your district operation working so your constituents have someone to call to help them find out if a loved one is in ICE custody.
Not everything about being in Congress is fun. But the things that aren’t enjoyable or exciting still need to get done.
If the Speaker of the House can do it…
BTW, every MoC gets some amount of $ to run their offices. They get it regardless of whether they do anything with it. Most MoC squeeze every penny for a good operation. But if they put hardly any resources in to constituent work, they still get it (& usually use it for salaries)
Oh, another constit services story; I had a job where that wasn’t a primary responsibility, but I sometimes supported staff doing it. Case I got most involved w was a guy who died when the trench he was digging collapsed & crushed/suffocated him.

Regulators at the scene…
…recommended numerous & serious violations, but political appointees overruled them. Long story, but end of it was criminal charges against one of the owners & the company out of business

Const services isn’t some neoliberal plot to squelch dissent.
