We know that ethylene oxide is a dangerous chemical that poses a serious health risk to Illinoisans and needs to be mitigated ASAP. My colleagues & I have called on EPA to do its part to investigate these threats, Sterigenics must acknowledge its role in this public health crisis
Yesterday, I asked the CEO of Sterigenics to maintain the pollution control technology they installed last summer. They committed to maintain it at their facility in Illinois and at every facility they operate across the Country.
.@SenatorDurbin, @RepBillFoster,@RepSchneider and @RepCasten and I will continue holding Sterigenics and EPA accountable and we will not stop until the people of Illinois are breathing clean, safe air.

These residents have every right to be outraged: the Trump EPA is letting them down and refusing to take basic steps to determine whether thousands of families are breathing in toxic chemicals every day.

This bipartisan deal is not perfect, but it prevents another wasteful and unnecessary government shutdown that hurts our economy and holds the paychecks of hundreds of thousands of government employees and contractors hostage.
Instead of forcing federal workers and their families to once again go without pay, this deal gives them a well-deserved cost-of-living increase.
It increases our investments in infrastructure, public health and environmental safety and it provides local communities with more resources to address the opioid epidemic.

Far too many Americans are still forced to choose between having a career and taking time off to care for a newborn or tend to an ailing loved one...
Every new parent should be able to take those exhausting, emotional, irreplaceable first few weeks with their baby without having to forgo their paycheck or lose their job, just like I was fortunate enough to do last spring after giving birth to my second daughter...
No one should be fired for taking time off to care for a loved one, like my husband was after he used all of his unpaid leave to be by my hospital bedside after I was wounded in Iraq...

1. I’ve had a burr under my saddle since the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (DACOWITS) was hijacked by “feminists” after the Tailhook investigation in 1992.
2. DACOWITS was charted in 1972 to provide advice and recommendations on matters relating to women in the Armed Forces of the United States. After Tailhook, leftwing Democrats Les Aspin (D-WI) and Patsy Schroeder in particular (D-CO) politically corrupted the membership.
3. “Tailhook” is a particularly painful memory for me, as my classmate, Bob Stumpf, the CO of the Blue Angels Squadron at the time, had his career effectively ended despite his non-participation in the actions that were investigated.

Here's the trick: 3% of all lung cancer in men may be result of asbestos exposure, but most men are never exposed, so we have to know more about odds ratios in individual professions or exposure categories to determine if 3% is low or high.
Until you get all the data carefully arranged, it's hard to even communicate whether asbestos is a serious health risk or not. In this case, I would call it a moderate risk to people with medium to high exposure: Less than cigarette smoking, more than just living in a city.
