Dear @HarvardHBS, @StanfordGSB and @Wharton, I am begging you to stop telling your students to do "informational interviews." They set the student up for failure. If student wants to find a way to start a dialogue without a formal interview, teach them to find a way to add value.
Offer to do a project the company might find interesting. Offer to make some intros or do research that could help the team the student is targeting. Anything but telling the student “just get on the phone and ask the employer what it’s like to work there.” Brutally painful.
For the record if any data scientists or engineers would like to do informational interviews - my calendar is wide open. 😁
