We're here at 010 East Pyne for the @PrincetonDH Year of Data keynote lecture with @safiyanoble. Stay tuned to our timeline for updates throughout the talk and follow along with #CDHYODA.
The talk this evening is entitled "Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism." @safiyanoble is an assistant professor at @USCAnnenberg. #CDHYODA
Associate professor of @PrincetonAAS Ruha Benjamin (@ruha9) introduces @safiyanoble with tales of "phone spying" and how younger generations are learning things on their own, without the use of screens. #CDHYODA
"Algorithms have been in the headlines for the last year or so in a different way than they had been before ... in 2013 my editor said, 'No one knows what an algorithm is.'" @safiyanoble on naming her book "Algorithms of Oppression." #CDHYODA
"Digital failures are often communicated [by saying] there's a glitch in an otherwise perfect operating system ... hoping to gather enough evidence that there's a little more than a glitch at play." @safiyanoble on common Silicon Valley explanations for major mistakes #CDHYODA
In 2012, the idea of bias within coding and algorithms was unheard of. "It's starting to become common knowledge that ... operating systems can discriminate." @safiyanoble on the growth of this idea in just a few years #CDHYODA
What's @safiyanoble's number one tip to teachers & parents?

"Stop telling your students just to @Google things." #CDHYODA
With past experience in the advertising industry, when @safiyanoble started her research, she knew ways to get on the first page of @google.

So, she knew these tactics could be manipulated by those who have the most money -- and that these searches are often biased. #CDHYODA
"One of the challenges of interdisciplinary work ... it kind of means you have to speak 5 languages instead of 1 ... but that work is really important if we're going to have the interventions we want to see." @safiyanoble on working across industries #CDHYODA
When talking about how the 2016 election brought algorithms into major headlines around the country, @safiyanoble notes that there are certainly those that believe "search engines can pose a real threat to our democratic system of government." #CDHYODA
"It's just insincere and disingenuous to tell the public that they should be more savvy and know better ... after years of being acculturated to look for banal things," @safiyanoble says that simple & easy but important things should be simple & easy to find. #CDHYODA
When a major bias incident occurs, a common response from a representative is that the company does not control searches and that everything is essentially automatic. "If Google is not in charge of their own results," @safiyanoble asks jokingly, "then, who is in charge?" #CDHYODA
"We're so concerned with the momentary dimensions ... that we're not thinking about how these platforms are being manipulated" in the long term, despite various hate groups having "100-year plans." @safiyanoble on the need for being literate in this field #CDHYODA
When it comes to search engines, @safiyanoble notes, "it might be great for finding out if Starbucks is across the street," but if you start asking deeper, social questions, "you get a whole different set of conversations." #CDHYODA
"An app will not save us. We will not sort out social inequality lying in bed staring at smartphones." @safiyanoble shares a portion of her book, which you can read here via @Wired 👇 #CDHYODA wired.com/story/social-i…
Wrapping up her @PrincetonDH Year of Data keynote address in front of a standing-room-only crowd, @safiyanoble says, "We have more data and technology than ever, and more social, political and economic inequality and injustice go with it." #CDHYODA
