At the old @therepublicnews building in Columbus for day two of Indiana University Board of Trustees meetings. First up this morning is the External Relations Committee. #IUBOT
Board forgot to approve personnel items during yesterday's meeting. Unanimously approved just now. Trustee Quinn Buckner not present. #IUBOT

Here’s a picture of the one side #IUBOT
And the other side #IUBOT
Medals were forged from bronze bells in the Student Building that were damaged in a fire in 1990. #IUBOT
Kish says IU worked with Indiana Metal Craft, of Bloomington, to melt the bells and create the medals. #IUBOT
Next up, Vice President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass with an athletics report. #IUBOT
Glass said one thing IU learned from Maryland tragedy is sports medicine people need to be talking with strength and conditioning people. #IUBOT
Says emergency personnel invited to IU athletics facilities to familiarize themselves with where things are to save time in the event of an emergency. #IUBOT
Says he's made it clear there will be no eye rolling or anything of the sort if a student athlete is taken out of practice or a game by training staff. #IUBOT
Board Chairman Michael Mirro asks about concussion protocol. Glass says IU was one of first schools to have neurologist at all home and away football games. Says there's medical professional in press box with authority to pull kids out. #IUBOT
Glass has mentioned this before, but points out department spent $175,000 to get 125 laser-measured custom football helmets, enough for every player. Since then concussions cut in half. #IUBOT
Glass says school record set recently with graduation success rate of 95.4%. In 2011, it was only 74.4%. #IUBOT
Glass says university's master plan for athletics is now complete, noting south end zone project completed Sept. 7, 2018 and Wilkinson Hall dedicated Jan. 16, 2019. #IUBOT
Says golf course and Terry Tallen football complex renovations will be finished this year. #IUBOT
Says about a quarter of a billion dollars has been invested in athletics facilities over the last decade. #IUBOT
Budget is double what it was about 10 years ago. #IUBOT
Trustee Patrick Shoulders hits Glass with some hard questions about the success of IU football and men's basketball. #IUBOT
Shoulders says he's elected by alumni and 95% of his constituents judge the success of the department Glass leads by the success of IU's football and basketball teams. #IUBOT
Shoulders says he's told football has had one winning season in 24 years and men's basketball hasn't been to a final four in 30 years. #IUBOT
Shoulders says you could pay a coach $300,000 a year to simply follow the rules, but when you give them multi-million dollar contracts, you expect more. #IUBOT
Shoulders asks if fans should expect success and what Glass' plans are to turn things around. #IUBOT
Glass acknowledged most people do judge his department on the success of football and men's basketball. #IUBOT
Addressing football first, Glass says he feels good about where IU football is in terms of trajectory moving forward. Said in the last 30 years, program has been to 3 bowl games, 2 of which were very recently. #IUBOT
Glass says football is hard to win at Indiana University. He feels continued investments and consistency are the way to be competitive. #IUBOT
Glass liked progress under former Coach Kevin Wilson, but they separated because of different priorities so he turned to Tom Allen. #IUBOT
Glass says he turned to Allen not because he ran into him at a coffee shop, but because he thought Allen would succeed Wilson as soon as he met him. He just thought it would be because Wilson was killing it and got snatched up by another school. #IUBOT
Glass says he was criticized for not conducting a national search and also for under paying Allen. Says Allen isn't underpaid and he looks forward to paying him a lot more because he's successful. #IUBOT
Glass said he has a high degree of confidence in Allen and he takes issue with the idea the football program is in a bad place. #IUBOT
Trustee Buckner, via speakerphone, asked Glass to explain why he thinks Allen is special. Glass points to results on the field everywhere Allen went, that Allen is clearly a leader of men, he cares about players as people and wants to make them better people. #IUBOT
Buckner asked Glass what he would consider successful in terms of football. Glass said it starts with regularly qualifying for bowl games, winning an eastern division championship and going to the Rose Bowl. Said there's not reason why they can't achieve that goal. #IUBOT
Glass: "I understand the frustration, but I have to look at the trajectory." #IUBOT
Switching to men's basketball, Glass said he's "bullish" on Archie Miller, but that Miller is in his second year of a "serious rebuild." #IUBOT
In regard to firing Crean, Glass said he was not looking back at Crean's success but forward and he didn't believe Crean could sustain that success. Mentions a team with 3 pros that didn't make the NCAA tournament. #IUBOT
Glass said he doesn't like losing 7 games in a row. Jokes that he thought about asking to give this presentation at a different meeting because it's "no fun to walk in here losing 7 in a row." #IUBOT
Glass says he thinks Archie will eventually be one of IU's iconic coaches. #IUBOT
Shoulders said Glass has no bigger supporter than him and what he hears Glass saying to fans is to be patient because the department is doing all the right things and they have the right people in the two most visible sports. #IUBOT
Shoulders concludes with this: "We all understand that patience is going to have its limits at some point." #IUBOT
Now on to Finance, Audit, and Strategic Planning Committee meeting. A vote on 2019-20 housing and meal plan rates is scheduled. Read more on that here: hoosiertimes.com/herald_times_o… #IUBOT
For IU's Bloomington campus, the proposal calls for a 3.48% increase for the most prevalent room and board rate for fiscal year 2020. #IUBOT
According to presentation slide, "A bump in rate increase levels would be needed to support completion of renovation cycle." #IUBOT
Provost Lauren Robel says renovation is perpetual. Collins, Wright and Ashton renovations planned for FY2021-23. Funded with combination of reserves and external financing. #IUBOT
Robel said IU Bloomington remains competitive in local market and the most prevalent room and board rate ranks as the 6th lowest in the Big Ten. #IUBOT
Committee unanimously approves rate increase proposals. Trustee Buckner not present. #IUBOT
Now on to the facilities and auxiliaries committee meeting. Agenda is pretty light. No new projects, but VP Tom Morrison has update on effects of recent cold weather. Says there were incidents of broken pipes on every IU campus, but effects were minimal. #IUBOT
Current project updates: Ballantine Hall estimated completion is January 2020. Cost: $47.1 million. #IUBOT
Art museum renovation was substantially complete in December with exception of cafeteria; that will be finished in March. It will reopen in fall 2019, after objects and displays are set up. Cost is $30 million. #IUBOT
Fine arts studio building addition was supposed to be finished in December. Not quite done yet. Cost: $7.8 million. #IUBOT
Teter quad mechanical systems replacement and renovation to be finished in June 2020. Cost: $17.8 million.
Wilkinson Hall opened last month. Here's more on that: hoosiertimes.com/herald_times_o… #IUBOT
Golf course set to reopen "late" this summer after $12 million renovation. Here's an update I did before winter set in. hoosiertimes.com/herald_times_o… #IUBOT
New IUB regional academic health center/academic health sciences building estimated completion is September 2020. Cost: $45 million. Soon there will be four cranes on the site. There's three there now, I'm told. #IUBOT
Committee meeting adjourned. Business meeting will convene at 1:30 p.m. While all board members serve on all committees, action items are not officially approved until receiving a majority vote during the board's business meeting. #IUBOT
Board's business meeting has begun. Chairman Mirro says he has no remarks other than say he's pleased with how IU has partnered with the city of Columbus. #IUBOT
McRobbie said he'll pass on reading his comments in the interest of time. Trustee Shoulders says that's the best report he ever gave. #IUBOT
Board unanimously approves all action items. Trustee Buckner not present. #IUBOT
Meeting adjourned. Next meeting April 4, 5 at IU Bloomington. #IUBOT
