RE: Drinking alcohol at tech conferences ...

No judgment zone ... I had a few conversations lately with some people who feel various ways about this topic. I fall on the side of those who don't drink (much) and do not feel comfortable at bar/after-hours events with alcohol

"You can just drink water and have fun". Yes, I can. But it's often not fun for me being in loud places, where it's hard to have a conversation (if at all), when I chose not to drink.

Also - after a full day + of event presentations, networking, and deep interactions a break is something I need. I need exercise to clear my mind. Rest. Mindshifting. Call my family. Prepare for the next day (mentally).

I go to events in large part to interact with people. The networking events are a big part of this. And when they facilitate conversations, I am there. This is where I listen and take notes to bring back to work.

Whether you choose to go or not, is entirely up to you and IMO there should be no judgment either way.

No pressure to go - or not go - to after-hours activities at tech conferences.

Why am I speaking out? Because I've been asked why I don't go to the bar and after hour drinking events. Told "I'm not doing the right thing." And I know there are others who feel like I do.

I'm speaking out to say it is OK to go - or not go.

you do you

Be yourself.

Take advantage of networking at tech conferences - but at your own dosage and pace.

And know that you are not alone - whether you are 24/7 at a tech event or you are setting your own pace.

7/x
Offer support to others who see things differently.

Be inclusive and supportive.

it's OK to take time to unwind if you need it.

and most of all - you do you :)
