X : Are you against a federal Europe?
Me : No, in favour.
X : I thought so. But why do you support brexit?
Me : I'm in favour of a democratic federation, the European Parliament etc but I will not willingly support the European Commission any more than I would the House of Lords.
... it's why I support DiEM25. The European commission should be like a civil service, it should not control the legislature schedule nor initiate / write the laws to be presented to parliament. That power should be with elected representatives only.
... by all means there should be a 2nd chamber of representatives and I would argue they should be picked by sortition. However, primary legislation - scheduling, initiation and voting - must be with elected representatives only. I will not stomach the EC any more than the HoL.
X : You would abolish the house of lords?
Me : I'd turn it into a private members club where you can get gongs, pomp and ceremony. The actual involvement in legislation I would put in a house of representatives.
X : Sortition?
Me : Random selection from the electoral register. The 2nd chamber should be a representative chamber. You can think of it like a permanent citizen's assembly.
