A negotiated democratic solution is the best path forward for #Venezuela, so its citizens can choose their own leaders through free, fair elections. No talks will be easy, but it’s clear sitting around waiting for a collapse or a so far improbable military uprising isn’t working.
Yes, Maduro used previous rounds of talks to buy time and divide the opposition. But it’s also true that the power balance has changed. Maduro is under far more internal & external pressure, and right now the opposition holds a stronger hand than they’ve had in years.
The opposition wants no part of any kind of bogus “dialogue,” and most importantly, neither does the international community. It’s unlikely any of the actors currently pushing for negotiations would accept a mediation framework that didn’t include new presidential elections.

One of the most interesting and perhaps illuminating questions is why Trump cares so much about #Venezuela. According to this story, Trump requested a briefing on Venezuela on his 2nd day in office. To state the obvious, that's odd. Why did he care so much?
Another interesting question arises out of the story. We already knew there was a WH mtg earlier this week with Sens. Rubio, Scott, and Rep. Diaz-Balart to discuss the plan for what happened Wed. Turns out Wilbur Ross and Mnuchin were also there...

I'm seeing a lot of "It's complicated" tweets about #Venezuela. That should go without saying. But one thing isn't complicated. Mere minutes after #Guaido declared himself interim President, the US recognised him as the legitimate President. It was clearly co-ordinated.
There's a debate about whether the US is backing or orchestrating the Guaido Coup but there should be no debate about whether it is a coup. It is somewhat akin to Andrea Leadsom or John Bercow unilaterally declaring themselves interim PM. It's undemocratic and unconstitutional.
Lots of folks saying Maduro has led a corrupt, ineffectual, & violent Government. Lots of others seeking to make this about Chavez. Most cite a wider economic context of Venezuelan discontents but not so much a wider global economic context of Venezuela's poor economy.

So before I begin this Venezuela thread I have to disclose I consider @KalebPrime a friend and it's difficult for me to see his country's situation deteriorate to this point.

We did a livestream together last year.
TL;DR is Dictator Nicolas Maduro held illegal presidential elections that were rigged from the get-go, and the aftermath of that made his inevitable victory be declared "illegal."

His replacement is Juan Guaido.
BUT ALSO Maduro still thinks he's in charge.

Thus, clusterfuck.

The number of Venezuelans who have fled their country in recent years is over 3 million, which has generated a refugee crisis in Latin America.
Venezuela is seeing outbreaks of preventable diseases that had been eradicated, such as measles and diphtheria, dramatic surges of illnesses such as malaria and tuberculosis, and increasing levels of malnutrition.
