A negotiated democratic solution is the best path forward for #Venezuela, so its citizens can choose their own leaders through free, fair elections. No talks will be easy, but it’s clear sitting around waiting for a collapse or a so far improbable military uprising isn’t working.
Yes, Maduro used previous rounds of talks to buy time and divide the opposition. But it’s also true that the power balance has changed. Maduro is under far more internal & external pressure, and right now the opposition holds a stronger hand than they’ve had in years.
The opposition wants no part of any kind of bogus “dialogue,” and most importantly, neither does the international community. It’s unlikely any of the actors currently pushing for negotiations would accept a mediation framework that didn’t include new presidential elections.
