...I've had a couple of people ask about the new album not being on streaming platforms (not many, cos most people can work out why without my help), but I would've needed over 40K streams of it so far to earn what I've earned from the relatively modest sales so far...
..and that's not factoring in my Bandcamp subscriber economics, cos those are impossible to break down per album, but constitute the VAST majority of my online earnings. So I'd need 40K over and above whatever the baseline might work out to be...

This is from a really interesting thread re. music finance... Go read it. But the fascinating thing for me here is the idea of ' taken drastic control' - even back in the 90s, I couldn't imagine that a) anyone else would want to release what I did, & b) it'd never make money
I was already a journalist by the time I started thinking about releasing solo music, and so I'd met and interviewed some of the world's top bassists and pretty much none were making money on releases except at the merch table...
...but they were having to buy stock from the label at VASTLY inflated prices to then sell for minimal gain. I realised that if I made 1000 CDs, gave away a couple of hundred for promo, sold the others for £10, I'd make enough to make the next one, and pay some bills. WIN!

Yo! I know the "Bird Box" screenwriter, and he's a dope dude. He also wrote "Arrival," and "Lights Out."

It's his birthday 🎂, and instead of just eating cake, he's out here giving other screenwriters advice on how to avoid cultural bias gatekeeping when pitching scripts. 👍🏿
Also dope, I first met Eric Heisserer (@HIGHzurrer ) at an event put on by the National Academy of Science, that puts technologists and screen writers in touch to make better and more representative movies.

You must sell something. Specifically, a product or a service. Something people want and are willing to buy at a price they're willing to pay. A blog, YouTube channel, etc. won't cut it. You need an offer.
You need people people to buy your offer, and a way to drive those people to your offer (i.e. a source of traffic). An organic social media following, SEO, paid traffic (FB ads, AdWords, etc.) are common examples.

Anyway about that LRT: if you have ever thought "we should protest" about anything in Trump's America you really need to be paying attention to the #j20 trials, in which people are being charged with felonies for having been in Facebook chats about the inaugural protests.
Obviously that's a simplification but it's the meat of it. People are being charged as felony conspirators *even though the government admits they committed no direct crimes*

Within a block of a smashed window? That's a felony trial.
Wearing a bandanna? Carrying a medkit for tear gas? Friends with someone more radical than you?

It's wholly possible that the government will use doctored Project Veritas videos in your shiny felony conspiracy trial!
