EU may help Ireland alleviate the impact of a no deal Brexit on its farming industry with a long-term support plan. Whereas UK farmers are at the mercy of our own Government, who are unlikely to be as pragmatic. theguardian.com/politics/2019/…
Wouldn't it be hilarious if the EU agreed to give Ireland our rebate?
If nothing else, Brexit is demonstrating the value of EU membership very, very effectively. It's like being friends with the biggest, richest, smartest kid in school. Pity our political class remain blind to this exorbitantly expensive lesson.

The way Brexit is unfolding, it's as if the passengers and crew of the Titanic decided to while away the hours before the fateful iceberg encounter by smashing holes in the ship.
Go through the Partnership Pack intently. There's page after page of new red tape, costs and burdens on businesses. List after list of things we won't have any more after no-deal Brexit. Like reading a full autopsy report for the UK *before* we're dead.

And then there's Liam Fox and his department. It has now emerged that they will be unable to roll over the vast majority of existing trade deals, EVEN IF THERESA MAY'S DEAL PASSES. Sorry for shouting, but that's PRETTY IMPORTANT REALLY.

UK Government has basically admitted that fresh food exports to the EU will cease after a no-deal Brexit until such a time as they manage to get "listed third party" status for UK. This little bombshell is buried on p.72 of the Brexit Partnership Pack.

And of course the rancid icing on this stinking cake is that UK companies won't be allowed to transport the stuff either...

Lilico, Mogg & other brexiters whine now about how the EU has "bullied" the UK however the 2 quotes below show how their intent to bully has catastrophically backfired

The EU economy was weak & we could threaten to take our military ball away, so of course we'd get a great deal
Fact is brexiters in their Empire nostalgia arrogance (linked to a belief that the EU, being foriners, would naturally defer to England) utterly misjudged the opposition

Instead of acknowledging this they've grabbed at "no deal" in desperation & pretend it was always the plan

Predictably, it has had holes picked in it - since there are indeed plenty of mighty assumptions in the 'plan'.

But I fear that misses the point. This is a political document, not a technical one. 1/

Brexit is indeed a muddle and a mess. The British frog is indeed being boiled. Brexit probably always was/is more binary than both sides have properly allowed. /2
@BorisJohnson I am not at all sure Boris is right that Whitehall and the EU conspired to keep the UK in a customs union, for example, but that will be a powerful anti-narrative if that's where we end up.

FWIW my conversations in Europe suggest rather different. /3

1. So today it looks like #Brexit has gone on the back-burner for the Tories. They have now entered a full blown civil war where Brexit is the proxy issue but the row is more to do with who will lead them into the next election. That's all that matters to them.
2. Brexit may be the theme, but this isn't about which plan wins out because everyone knows Chequers will not work. The ERG faction just maintain the pantomime that it is a serious proposition because the average Tory voter (not by accident) thinks it is a plan in play.
3. Consequently we now see Tory activists siding with the ultras even though the ultras don't have a plan. They don't even care about Brexit. They've just convinced themselves that Chequers, or more precisely Theresa May, will lose them the next election.

#1: When the UK voted leave, many said the EU would be weakened. Today it is clear that the contrary is true: it’s the UK not the EU that has been weakened by Brexit.
#2a Whatever people say, it would have been possible for Britain to change its mind about Brexit. Many political decisions, even after referenda, have been reversed in many countries.

This analysis, by my former boss @CER_Grant, is sound as far as it goes...but in my view omits a few very important factors...1/ of a thread on aspects Charles couldn't possibly fit into a short op-ed (and I try not make too long a thread out of it :-).
2/ As many Irish and other EU commentators have long noted, Charles - who is rightly widely read and respected across the EU - seems to have long suggested that the other EU26 may not back Ireland in a final treaty crunch. In a straight geo-politics game he might be right, but...
3/...this has annoyed a few people because it goes to the heart of what the EU is, especially for Ireland. If the EU does not back Ireland on such an existential question - and yes folks, #Brexit is existential - then why should Ireland stay in the EU? Or any other small member?
