Study on superiority of taking notes by hand does not replicate. Just an idea, but how about we give students the agency to take notes in the way that they feel works best for them? link.springer.com/article/10.100…
I get that we older folks find some student ways foreign, but I recall a moment at the end of class as I was sharing important info and a student was furiously typing away on her phone and I said "this is important," and she replied, "I know that's why I'm writing it down."
I thought the student was texting because that's all I associate furiously typing on a phone with. She used her phone as a different kind of tool and in a way I probably never could or would. Trust students to know what they need and listen to them when they tell you.
