Great point by @lindseyhilsum re: Marie Colvin, conflict journalists and PTSD. Almost every adult I knew during my childhood was a war correspondent. I realized early in life that they were mostly haunted and unhappy. This work can take pieces of your soul if you're not careful.
I always tell war journalists who have children that they must take care of their mental health. The hardest thing about being the child of someone who has seen too much death is the knowledge that your parent has built a wall around their heart and blaming yourself for it.
It took me years after I started doing conflict journalism to allow myself to enter an active war zone, not out of fear for my safety (I am my father's daughter, for better or worse) but for fear of what I would see in my dreams afterwards. I knew the price of those experiences.
The best thing any war journalist can do is let themselves talk about what they see and cry about the things that haunt them. Don't buy into the machismo and build that wall around your heart, because the people who love you will always be on the outside, trying to get in.
Anyway, here's the link to that fantastic piece on Marie Colvin. Every conflict reporter should read it, especially the young ones, not just to know more about Marie's complicated bravery but so they can memorize the price of not taking care of themselves. ft.com/content/c72c57…
