Irish law granting citizenship to anyone born on the island of Ireland was "unique" in the European Union and unusual worldwide. It made the country an "attractive target destination" compared to our neighbours, according to the memo:
Becoming a parent of an Irish-born child "attracts greater entitlement" than would be the case in any other EU member state, memo claimed. Said this was putting strain on hospital services and "creating long-term commitments" for the state:

Thread: Dept of Justice considered appealing to the High Court after being told they would have to ask former minister Frances Fitzgerald to search her private email addresses for correspondence with Terry Prone & the Communications Clinic.
This is a submission from Deputy Secretary General Oonagh McPhillips to Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan. It was suggested appealing this might not be wise considering the discovery of in excess of 100 emails the Department had originally said did not exist:
Submission says that special advisers to @FitzgeraldFrncs were asked if they held any records that might be relevant to the request. "They indicated there were no such records," even though one of them was in regular contact with Terry Prone seeking PR and speech advice:

Thread: Attorney General advised Dept of Justice they did not have to contact ex-minister #FrancesFitzgerald about e-mails with #TerryProne & the Communications Clinic. These were among records that Dept originally said didn't exist but were believed held on private email account
This followed instruction from Office of the Information Commissioner that Ms Fitzgerald should be contacted to see what records she held. Interestingly, Dept ended up doing it anyway despite advice from Attorney General. Background to this here: oic.ie/decisions/ken-…
Records also show that during original handling of request back in March 2017, two of Frances Fitzgerald's special advisers said they had no records relevant to the request. One of them was in very regular contact with Ms Prone (names deleted by me)

Gold: Good morning. #Gold trading around $1294/oz in European hours on Monday.

Gold: No CFTC data, as has been the case since 18 December due to the government shutdown, but we estimate that the net long Managed Money position in #gold has probably increased by 2 million ounces to 8.5moz as of Friday.

This is from an examination of changes in Comex open #gold interest and price moves. Although OI has increased quite a lot, I suspect some shorts have entered the market over the past week, as well as some new longs.

Gold: Considering that we had a very strong Employment Report out of the US on Friday, #gold performed pretty well over the past 18 trading hours. At $1291/oz at the time of writing it is some $15 above its post-NFP plunge and only about $7 below Friday morning's high.

Gold: XAUUSD trading lower this morning in European hours after the weakness see on Friday. Most of the weakness seems to be due to a stronger USD; #gold is up in euro and roughly flat in CNY but DXY is at more than a one-year high.

Gold: We noted last week that a ‘gap’ had opened on our gold vs DXY chart. That hasn’t closed as such, but the strength in the dollar is dragging #gold lower.

Real US Treasury rates haven’t moved much in the past few days, but despite the move lower in #gold the gap that we’ve mentioned on a few occasions in the past month is still there.

As others have mentioned, #gold is having a good morning today, trading aroun $1234.50/oz, probably on more short-covering.

Although positioning is not as extreme as it was, Comex speculators still hold large short positions and more gains could be seen.

Gold: How did #gold fare through the crisis? This chart, from July 2008 to July 2009, shows no sign of gold moving rapidly higher? In fact, gold fell in the fourth quarter of 2008 as the dollar strengthened and gold was used as a source of liquidity (and sold.)
