As Bezos himself hints, the interesting thing about this (once we get past the giggling-about-penis phase) is: What made AMI so skittish about the claims of political motivation that they resort to extortion in response?
It’s not like threatening Bezos would put an end to public suggestions that AMI’s coverage is politically motivated—because, well, obviously it is. So this only makes sense if there’s specific information they were worried about investigators uncovering.
The other obvious question to ask is: Exactly how often has the Enquirer pulled this tactic in the past and gotten away with it? They must have quite an archive of salacious material.
This doesn’t seem like the kind of move you pull for the first time on a tech billionaire who owns a newspaper. It’s the kind of move you get arrogant enough to pull here because lots of other powerful people have caved in the past.
Why wouldn’t AMI’s lawyers be terrified Bezos would do exactly what he’s done in this case & publicize the extortionate threat? The obvious possibility is: Because the last ten guys didn’t….
