Historical forest structure was predominately determined by climate/adaption to climate. To endure resilient forests in our climate change era, we should restore the historical envelope (as best we can), reduce adaptation barriers, then let the climate determine the new structure
This pragmatic approach views restoration as the best path to new, future conditions. It is contrary to simplistic (often pop sci) critiques which imagine restoration as trying to recreate a static past which is now irrelevant due to climate change.
On an evolving planet, the best way forward isn't to imagine we can predict the incredibly complex future and engineer even more complex ecosystems to "match" it. It is to repair the barriers to adaption we have we wrought, then allow the complex ecosystem/climate dance proceed.
