I want to talk about abortion and BC from the perspective of the 70s and what we knew. BC was difficult to get and I very well remember living in MPLS and going to my 1st gyno appt, which was like the Spanish Inquisition.
I was asked all kinds of ? about why I wanted BC and how long I had been having sex with my boyfriend, which was 3 yrs. Then I was asked if we were thinking of marriage, and at that time that was a YES.
I was the last of 8 kids and my Mother was 43 when she had me. In my 50's my cousin, who was like my older sister, told me that she had heard my mother tried to abort me several times. I was not surprised. I knew I was not wanted and kinda given to my aunt.
My aunt came to live with us when I was 2 and ended up raising me and adopting me when I was 22yr. My oldest sister was 18 yr. older than me and had a miscarriage about the same time I was born. She delivered her 1st child a 1 1/2 later after me.
So, after that baby my sis had 5 more. And she was tired of having babies and talked to a dr. who knew about a study of BC and she was one of the trials, at least from what I was told a long time ago. No more babies.
When I was in HS I dated a boy for 3 yrs and a bit after. Of course the aspirin btw. the legs did not work, but my aunt, who raised me had given me a book about the rhythm method and it worked pretty well, but there was 1 time... I was afraid it did not. WELL, I got the period.
We kids were scared to death, as we knew we were not ready to be parents. We escaped that. So I went off and ended up in MPL, the big city, and he and I were still dating and I went to the gyno. Ok that is the 1st part of this.
So I got BC, but we broke up and I went to another state to college. This was the time of free love and having fun and I did, as many of us did. I met many young women and explained to them ... how you got PG and should not because you lose your choices in life.
I was going to college because I wanted to have a career, but there were young women there who were more interested in getting their MRS. degree, and believe everything the young men told them....you know how that works.
Abortion was legal became legal and I can not remember just when, but I was an advocate that if you are going to play you MAY have to pay. There were a few I know who did get abortions, but only a few. There was one who kept her baby and we all worked hard to help her.
From what I heard many years later she did ok and her son did too. But...back to my point. Abortion was never to be an option for BC. NOT! I have said in another post that it was presented to us then as a "dire" option and only after a few missed periods.
We did not have the technology to see what was happening in the womb. When did the "mass of cells" become a viable human. We did not have the tech to save these small humans then.
Not only has that all change, but my opinion on abortion has too. BUT...BUT...BUT...my opinion on BC has not. There are many, many, many more options for BC!!!! I am appalled that we are not educating more woman their options on BC and from what I understand it is affordable.
If it is not affordable then it something we need to change. Then...if women are not using it and being responsible, we need to make it that they MUST. We do not support those who are irresponsible. That is a strong statement, but when you have women who....
make the same "mistakes" over and over... we need to do something. I never thought I would say that, but the world has changed. Then there is the whole topic of making the daddies responsible...and I have some idea on that.
BUT...that is another topic to address. Usually I do not discuss social issues, but this one is a BIG pet peeve of mine and.... OK...
So hope this strikes a never with others. PP is a farce and we need actual ed. on BC and then we would not have this insane rate of abortion or the INSANITY OF THESE LATE TERM ABORTIONS AND INFANTICIDE.
