The Saudi government trolls were completely silent about the story for the first 48-72 hours, but are now out in force. You'll see them under everything I tweet on the topic.
We'll also share an important announcement from @Kawaakibi, later today.

We've been digging into this story, and the multiple stories that came out of it, for days. The list of "coincidences" is growing to the point where no reasonable person can call them coincidences. We thought we can do a follow-up thread, but now this needs more like 20.

One of the biggest problems in debates is when you think the other side doesn't align with you in values. The "other side" then become not only wrong, but "bad people" (with bad values).
Perhaps debates should start with an acknowledgement of shared values, such that the conversation can be more focused and less adversarial.
Also - and this doesn't contradict with the above - I think that without a minimum set of shared values, debate is actually impossible.

You're willfully misrepresenting my argument by presenting this single tweet out of its context. You're welcome to engage but at the very least argue in good faith. Guess what: Lack of nuance is not moral clarity.
There are two very important considerations here: Making a community feel included is one. Ensuring children are provided the same level of fundamental protection of their rights as any other children in society is another.
If the community feels excluded then like I described in my thread, they react by closing up even more and this can cause more harm to children, not less.

Is it wrong to make a little girl wear a hijab? I think is is wrong. Is it *child abuse*? No, it's not. The moment we refer to it as child abuse, we're basically saying it's a serious crime and the authorities need to get involved. This is *not* how you get communities to change.
Is it child abuse to *force* a girl to wear a hijab? Well it's child abuse to use physical force on a child in anyway. That's a red herring, and it's not what we're talking about here.
Many Muslim communities, and especially highly conservatives ones, feel pressured and singled out, especially with the wave of right wing populism which has had real consequences, not only extra-legally (attacks) but also legally (populists getting elected)

So, on the whole @IlhanMN controversy, I wanted to do this #thread pointing out the absurdity of saying it's off limits to mention money and support for Israel, when the US media (rightly) does mention money, influence-peddling & lobbying when it comes to Saudi Arabia and DC.

The #Saudi regime’s “Authority to Counter-Extremism” has made a one-minute ad in which it conflates women who escape Saudi male guardianship with men who join ISIS and other violent extremist groups. The conflation of feminism with terrorism. I am writing about this. Wow.

In February, #JamalKhashoggi kindly shared the Arabic version of an oped I wrote for Washington Post about #MosqueMeToo which I started for Muslim women to talk about sexual harassment and assault in Sacred spaces, including Hajj in Makkah, #Saudi Arabia
Immediately after Jamal shared my column, i was inundated with one of the worst and most coordinated attacks by #Saudi regime trolls I have ever experienced. For days. It was a window into how much shit he and other Saudis who are critical got and continue to get.

The oldest memory I have of using fountain pens goes back to std. 5 in school. Till std. 4, we were made to use pencils and I absolutely hated using them because you needed to press hard on the paper for the writing to be fairly dark and legible.
So imagine my joy when we were finally allowed to use pens in school! My mother had bought me and my cousin some beautiful fountain pens on her trip to Mumbai in the summer vacations.
