Glad #Saudi troll farms & their connection to Saudi regime have been studied. I’ve experienced plenty attacks for my writing on women’s issues in #Saudi & my opposition to #Yemen war: 1 of most coordinated came after #Jamalkhashoggi shared 1 of my articles nytimes.com/2018/10/20/us/…
In February, #JamalKhashoggi kindly shared the Arabic version of an oped I wrote for Washington Post about #MosqueMeToo which I started for Muslim women to talk about sexual harassment and assault in Sacred spaces, including Hajj in Makkah, #Saudi Arabia
Immediately after Jamal shared my column, i was inundated with one of the worst and most coordinated attacks by #Saudi regime trolls I have ever experienced. For days. It was a window into how much shit he and other Saudis who are critical got and continue to get.
Pro-regime #Saudi trolls attacked me en masse again after #Canada called for release of feminists in Saudi Arabia & latter kicked out Canadian ambassador, also as documented here by @rerutled over my criticism of #Saudi-led US-backed war on #Yemen
The #Saudi regime & I are not exactly on friendly terms. 2004-2006 I was a columnist for Asharq al-Awsat, owned by a half-brother of MBS. I was banned & I wrote this about it. The paper threatened to sue me for libel unless I stopped saying I was banned. nytimes.com/2006/06/19/opi…
i am lucky (!) because I get a double dose of regime attacks: #Saudi AND #Egypt. Along with other #Egyptian activists, dissidents and critics of the #Sisi regime, I was targeted by cyber espionage end of 2016 bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
The #Egyptian and #Saudi regimes have much in common when it comes to silencing critics.
I am an independent writer. I do not work for anyone. I have worked very hard to stay this independent because it allows me to say and do what I believe in. So I am proud that the regimes of #Egypt and #Saudi Arabia take the time to target me.
Here is @rerutled documentation of the coordinated attacks I got over my criticism of the #Saudi-led US-backed war on #Yemen
For ages now I’ve been saying those trolls are used to silence us and this paragraph explains how. I’ve long wondered how visible my tweets are because relative to my follower size, interaction isn’t so high. Twitter “blunts” impacts of tweets when trolls en masse report us.
I am not saying I should be getting 100k retweets but I have long wondered how visible my tweets are, people complain they don’t see them and everyone and then I get a surge of suspicious followers. Twitter purge a few months ago deleted 9k fake followers. So what’s happening?
And look at what the #Egyptian regime has in store for us: Read @soltanlife thread
And THAT IS WHY holding the #Saudi regime accountable for its killing of #JamalKashoggi is CRUCIAL! They must not be allowed to get away with it. Otherwise our regimes have an even brighter green light to come for us one by one. And they will.
I have never met him but I remember when @soltanlife was a political prisoner in #Egypt for almost 2yrs. That same regime’s riot police broke my arms and sexually assaulted me almost exactly 7yrs ago. No matter our politics, as long as we oppose that regime, it will come for us.
In #Egypt, my friend Wael Abbas was arrested in May and has been held since without trial. Another friend, Mostafa Massouny, was forcibly disappeared in 2015. Those are just two names of thousands killed, jailed, disappeared by the #Egyptian regime nytimes.com/2016/04/05/opi…
The Sisi regime has jailed or disappeared just about all critics. A couple of week ago, activist Amal Fathy was sentenced to 2yrs for “fake news” for posting a video exposing sexual harassment. All critics. And that regime has sentenced to death hundreds. #Egypt
Sisi & his regime HAVE NOT BEEN held accountable for killing a thousand people in a matter of just hours Aug 14, 2015 in the Raba’a and Nahda Square massacres. It was the worst mass killing in modern #Egyptian history. What happens when tyrants get away with murder? They get worse
Trump who I despise and who has dictator envy has called Sisi “a fucking killer” according to Bob Woodward. Trump who has continued horrendous US foreign policy that sides with our dictators against us, has made it worse with his own authoritarianism.
Ok this is much longer than I intended but I am FUCKING ENRAGED.
Read about Wael Abbas here google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.… #Egypt
Read about Amal Fathy here nymag.com/developing/201… #Egypt
Meant to post all those before but I’m tweeting and getting ready to fly!
And this is me Nov 25, 2011, Tahrir Square (day after riot police broke my left arm and right hand and sexually assaulted me) #Egypt
There are so many other names. Too many.
