Because Trump occupies the office of President, TV pundits somehow seem honor-bound to take what he says seriously, even when it's obvious nonsense. They continue to respect an institution that the man has destroyed. They need to change their orientation to the office.
Trump has rendered the "presidency" meaningless. Even his own staff and administration don't respect him as the POTUS. He's constantly managed, coddled, and thwarted. His entire approach is incoherent. Pundits treating him as though he's a normal President advances a fiction.
It's all well and good to note that Trump is going to have a tough time in court with his emergency declaration, but this misses the bigger story, that the man who occupies the most powerful position in the world is off the rails. That's the story.
If a reporter or pundit is thinking they can't state the obvious (Trump is unfit and not in control of his own presidency) because this is somehow biased, they are coming out as against conveying accurate and truthful information to their audiences. It's blindingly obvious.
This will all come out after Trump is gone. The vast majority of Trump's staff, the cabinet, even figures like Lindsey Graham will all say that they were just trying to manage a disaster and that Trump was unfit, and yet this is rarely if ever reported by mainstream pundits.
Part of the job of those reporters and pundits is to continue to pretend that Trump is somehow in the realm of normal operations. He is not. They all know it. There is no argument otherwise. And yet...they won't come out and say it. It's a collective press failure.
