Natives that keep making the comparisons between Redface and Blackface, and asking people to be equally outraged, what actions have you done for the Black community this year? When did you last show up for the Black community in a meaningful way, or call out anti-Blackness?
Are you Natives who make these comparisons actively calling out anti-Blackness within your Native communities, by your friends, by your family, and recognizing it for what it is? Are you showing up for the Black community to march on these issues putting yourself on the line?
Are you being the ally that you are demanding so hard of others and not keeping score? Because it’s easy to demand solidarity for our issues, but it’s a whole other thing to put in work for other communities as well as your own, and be open to learning & possibly being wrong.
If the only time you speak up about Blackface is when you talk about Redface and headdresses, you are just as wrong.
Natives are like “yay Kaepernick” when he shows up for Natives, but be quick and ready to turn on him just as fast. We all waiting around to jump down Kevin Hart’s throat, but I see the memes/comments, you all share to your rez friends.
There’s a lot of anti-Blackness within Native communities, and I see a lot of you Natives sit around silent about it or defending it, for you to saying “They the same thing though.” Where’s the same energy then, if that’s so? I don’t see it.
Next one I see do it, I am looking at your timeline and see how many times you said Black Lives Matter and speaking about that and only that, without tone policing and playing respectability politics. Also, #BlackLivesMatter.
Those comparison caricatures with Native mascots, kinda seems like an excuse for somebody to draw the worse stereotypes of other groups, and how did you know exactly what the most offensive forms would be? Also, they are incredibly lazy. Yeah, I said it.
I am not really about fighting racism with racism. Racism is based in power though, so the “Fighting Whities” basketball team with Native players was legit. But also, it backfired, because of the unequal power dynamic, it won’t ever be the equivalent of Natives as mascots.
