The militarization of our police has been accelerated thanks to qualified immunity and war on drugs, and the city of Washington DC is no exception.
DC Police have decided that their "training and expertise" is "paramount" to the rights we all have. Instead of finding probable cause, they just say they will find something.
In a review of 2,000 warrants, 14% were issued without finding probable cause, only invoking their training and experience. About 99% of these "warrants" involved Black suspects.

Hey @MassAGO, your rabid attack on Purdue ignores a few things:

1. Substances are not the problem.

Yes, the Sacklers engaged in shady & dangerous marketing tactics, but opiate use has been on the rise since the 70's.

With the constant attack on pain medication, it's nearly impossible for the people who need them to get them.

Boards, raids by the DEA & *guidelines* created by @supportprop that have been abused & twisted into draconian laws have not only devastated pain care in America, it's opened the door for exceptionally more dangerous substances to take over, like #illicitfentanyl. (Cont)

A group of young migrants from Guatemala are brutally murdered in northern Mexico.
On the night of January 22nd to 23rd, abruptly on a country road outside the town of Camargo. The police found 19 bullet-riddled and carbonized bodies next to two burned-out cars. Some are said to have been cut up.
It is still unclear what exactly happened that night. The 17-year-old Robelsi was with fourteen other young migrants from Guatemala as well as two coyotes (smugglers) and two local guides when they came across twelve police officers from a special unit in the state of Tamaulipas.

Let's look at some common-sense q's on #PAIN & #ChronicPain

1) If pain is so benign (not harmful), why is it used in torture?
2) If chronic pain is something people can get used to, why is it outlawed in the Geneva Conventions? (Rule 90)
3) Is addiction so terrible that it's worse than a terminal disease?

3a) If is is worse, why do we imprison addicts & not send to hospice?

According to 2016 census the population was 631,486. Let's pretend the population has not fluctuated. 755 represents around - 0.12% of the population.
But wait! Only 363 of the 755 respondents lived in Vancouver. So that represents like 0.06% of the whole of Vancouver's population. See anything wrong with this tweet @VancouverPD?

Even as the world moves away from the #deathpenalty, #Singapore continues to insist on not just capital punishment but also the #WaronDrugs. From my observation, the majority of death row inmates have been sentenced to hang for drug offences.

Thread 🧵 sharing some quotes from an article I reshare often re: racism and the “opioid crisis”

@jnetherland Netherland, J. & Hansen, H. B. (2016). The War on Drugs That Wasn't: Wasted Whiteness, "Dirty Doctors," and Race in Media Coverage of Prescription Opioid Misuse.

“One of our strongest findings was that drug use in black and Latino urban communities is not considered newsworthy. ...
The absence of stories and what is missing in the stories that exist are in of themselves telling.”

“Story after story describes drug use in suburban, white communities as a new and dangerous phenomenon, even though decades of the epidemiological evidence shows that blacks and whites have long used illicit drugs in relatively similar proportions (SAMHSA 2014).”

Exactly four years ago today, I photographed this image that would later be called “pieta.”

On July 23, 2016, under a footbridge along Edsa Pasay Rotonda, Jennilyn Olayres cradled her partner Michael Siaron after being shot to death by motorcycle-riding gunmen.
It was a traumatic night for many reasons. Traumatic to me because to this day, the voice of Olayres still lingers in my mind.
As she held her lifeless partner in the middle of a crime scene, surrounded by bystanders, police, and the press, she screamed at us photographers, begging to stop taking photos and help her instead.

Breonna Taylor's death was a tragedy. It was also completely avoidable.

When thinking of no-knock raids, you envision hostage situations, active shooters, and kidnappings. Violent, urgent, critically dangerous circumstances.
However, those cases account for only 7% of no-knock warrants, while an estimated 79% were executed in drug related search raids.
Astoundingly, 65% of those yielded no contraband of any sort.
Breonna Taylor was one of these cases.
No-knock raids are common practice. Their use has increased substantially as a tool to fight the war on drugs. It's time to end the practice across the country.

End No-Knock Raids.
End the #WarOnDrugs…

It’s easy to joke about the criminalisation of #antifa, but UK folks might have missed new legislation here that's massively expanding surveillance, police powers + sentencing for terrorism suspects. Let’s talk about the new #CounterTerrorism and Sentencing bill. [THREAD 1/]
The bill ends the prospect of early release for serious terrorism offenders and widens the list of offences classed as terror-related to ensure they carry tougher sentences. It also increases the maximum penalty for membership of a proscribed organisation from 10 to 14 years. 2/
It includes a £90 million funding boost for counter-terrrorism police + an extension of maximum prison sentences across the board. With UK prisons increasingly run for profit by private companies, it’s unlikely this is borne purely out of a concern for public safety. 3/

“Second verse, same as the first.”

The Establishment Democrats and their corporate shills on TV and all over social media are already signaling that they want Bernie to drop out of the race, even though half of America hasn’t voted yet.

This was always their main objective.
They sent almost 30 candidates at him.
They spent easy over a billion collectively.
Even now every state has disturbingly inaccurate exit polling that in any other country the OAS would deem as a fraudulent election. And yet here we are.

My name is Dawn Anderson, & today I should be celebrating my 54th brithday.

I was a grandmother, mother, aunt, & dear friend.

I was also a #ChronicPain patient.

I used #opioid medication to maintain a decent #QualityOfLife.

I was forcibly tapered from my pain meds in 2016.
I found other patients who were suffering because of the #WarOnDrugs, & I cried out for help.

I shared my story with journalists.

I wrote my PCP a letter.

I attended a #DPPRally with my daughter @AmandaLatronica. I'm so proud of her. She's a #warrior!…
In March 2019, my kidneys failed me, & I ended up at the hospital.

I was strapped to a hospital bed & injected with thorazine because I was confused.

The pain was horrific & STILL-no one listened. #PainStigma

I decided to let go on March 11, 2019.

I refused dialysis, & died.

1. Nobody wants to say what needs to be done about the #RefugeeCrisis. We have allowed this hemisphere to become hell for many people and should not be surprised when they try to escape. The crime is the result of years of corruption amplified by the US thirst for illegal drugs.
2. We need to run up the white flag and declare the #WarOnDrugs lost. I would take control of the opiates on the street provide maintenance drugs and treatment to everyone afflicted. All people who obtain the public drugs would be put in treatment. Addictive drugs like opiates
3. cocaine and amphetamines get priority treatment. Pot would be legal for over 21. No drug abuse would go untreated. Nobody would go to jail for being a drug user. Nobody would make any money from selling illegal drugs. No income would be made by central american gangs here.
