1) I like how they included an excuse for why he paid them money, clearly setting up the defense here.

2) This possibility would be a lot more believable if he hadn’t blatantly lied about details of the attack and tried to pawn it off on others.
As I said earlier today, there are possibilities here based on the public evidence. The testimony of the 2 individuals, the money, and behavior of Smollett make 1 seem very unlikely:
I guess Smollett’s lawyers have to do what they have to do, but no one should take this spin seriously.

His behavior has been despicable and has harmed real victims. He is not one.
He has nothing to lose now. Once he admits it, his career is over and he could be facing criminal charges. Might as well keep denying.
