“I come from Canada, race doesn’t matter in my country; I’m from a small British town of 5000 people we are not complicit in racism...” I’m sure you’ve all heard variants of these...” @LindiMazibuko & Robin Di Angelo dropping words of wisdom at the gorgeous Conduit Club this am
“As a white person who grew up in a largely white space, ask yourself when did you first realise that black people existed, and in what context? Was it by watching Disney? How were they portrayed?” Robin di Angelo, author of White Fragility at the Conduit Club
“The default of this society is racism & it can simply be sustained by white people being nice. Being nice to individual black people isn’t going to bring racism to the table, in a way that allows us to discuss & tackle it. Being nice is not enough..” Robin Di Angelo
“I think white people asking “What do I do about this?” is disingenuous. Google the hell out of it. Ask yourself why don’t I as an educated person know this? Was I never taught? Is it uncomfortable to me? Why? It’s hard work & difficult but must be done” Robin Di Angelo
Emotions are political. They are framed by the context. 20 years ago if you had told me Robin you’re racist, I would have had a certain emotional reaction. Now I’m more likely to say “thanks for pointing this out, can you tell me what and why made you say that?” Robin Di Angelo
@LindiMazibuko talks about the missing role of black people & their contributions to knowledge in areas as diverse as education, health, governance...I often ask white people, why do you feel so threatened by this decolonisation argument? What do you fear?
In response, Robin Di Angelo says: “Someone once said, When you have had 100 per cent forever, going down to 98 per cent feels like oppression”
