1/So, just to take a break from complaining about the world's problems, here's a thread of San Francisco restaurant recommendations!
2/My favorite izakaya in SF is Izakaya Kou.

(For those who don't know, izakaya is like Japanese tapas.)

This would be considered a solidly good izakaya in Japan, I think. A mix of traditional and original dishes. And they almost always have open seats.

3/My favorite hot pot place in SF is actually A) a chain, and B) individualized rather than communal hot pot!

It's a Taiwanese place called Tasty Pot.

4/But if you want traditional communal hot pot, my favorite place is called Dragon Beaux.

It isn't on most lists of hot pot places, but it's the best I've found, and usually not as crowded as other places.

5/Bask is a Basque tapas restaurant. It's amazing, not too pricey, and - like most of my favorite places - tends to have open seats.

6/The best taqueria I've found in SF so far is Taqueria Vallarta, on 24th St. The taco bar is amazing.

7/I'm typically very disappointed by most ramen in America, but Mensho Tokyo SF is a huge exception. Some of the best ramen I've had in any country. Run by a very successful Japanese chef.

8/Mission Chinese is a pretty well-known place, but it deserves its good reputation. It's hipster Chinese fusion food...but actually good, somehow.

Make sure to go for lunch, when there's typically no line.

9/Everybody loves Burma Love, and there's a good reason for that.

If you show up before 6:30 you might be able to get a table!

10/The one other fusion place I like is Bon, Nene, a Japanese fusion place. Everything is pretty good except, for some reason, the dumplings.

There is a massive amount of economics research showing that giving poor people money improves their quality of life, educational outcomes, and health outcomes.
Too tired now, but I'll do a thread and a Bloomberg post about how giving poor people money is surprisingly effective at improving their long-term outcomes.
It is true that there are things besides money that help poor people (various social services, good-specific transfers like food stamps, etc.), but that's no excuse not to give poor people money.

Today's @bopinion post is an alternative bear case for China.

Most China bears focus on excessive debt and the risk of a "hard landing". Instead, I focus on the possibility that China will win the economic battle but lose the war.

China hasn't had a recession in a very long time.

China bulls say that this is because the government has everything under control.

They're probably right.
But HOW does the Chinese government actually control the economy in order to prevent recessions from ever happening?

They appear to use a lot of credit policy. What we might call "macroprudential" policy.

I have to say, I'm more on the GND side than the Yellen side when it comes to environmental policy.

Both approaches under-emphasize technology and international incentives, but the Yellen approach under-emphasizes these things more.

1. With @realDonaldTrump once again going after the Ninth Circuit (Happy Thanksgiving, I guess??), here's a medium-sized #thread on each of the five independent factual inaccuracies, analytical problems, and/or outright lies at the heart of his judicial temper tantrum:
1. Let's start with the easiest and most obvious flaw: The actual decision that has set off this tirade was by a federal district judge in San Francisco, _not_ the Ninth Circuit. Especially if he's relying on reversal rates (more on that shortly), that's a pretty key distinction.
2. As for the decision itself, the Executive Order the district court put on hold purports to redefine eligibility for asylum in a manner that is squarely inconsistent with the text of the relevant statute, 8 U.S.C. § 1158.

Odds are that _any_ judge would've ruled the same way.

1/ Amid Twitter maybe getting rid of the "like" to promote "better dialog" and certainly giving safe haven to nazis and other extremists, a rant:
2/ You probably noticed how, people came forward to say that they'd reported the bomber for violent threats, and Twitter (as always) did nothing and (as always) now apologizes but (as always) won't say how they'll better handle. They won't, and I'll tell you one big reason why.
3/ to address complaints about threats and "improve the dialog" Twitter introduced the "quality filter." You see fewer threats and hate speech. BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN THERE'S LESS OF IT.

1. My heart breaks for our country. What's worse is I knew this was coming for my entire life. How? I was forced to become one of them for 3 yrs.
I was a "Soldier of God" to take down the civil rights of the 50s & liberal rights of the 60s. -- Ask me anything about that plan.

Q. What are the basic teachings in a far-right fundamentalist school (cult)?
A. Rich white healthy straight men are blessed by God to lead this nation. Everyone else must serve God by serving these leaders. Laws are created to support the leaders & empires.
3. Q. What is the basic fight? Why do they not help those who are suffering?
A. To them suffering on Earth is only temporary. If they hurt others to fulfill the plan, then it's God's will. The only way a person can stop hurting is to turn to God to go to heaven & suffer no more.
