keep reading #wernick's statement and it gets more disturbing with each go. start with his context. "a lot has been said and written in the last few weeks." that is what he's responding to, testifying about, the SNC-Lavalin affair. That is why he is worried about "my country" 1/x
He goes immediately from that to "foreign interference" in our politics in an election year. There is a plain suggestion that a lot of what has been said and written in the last few weeks is foreign interference. Why else does one follow the other? 2/x
He then goes to "the rising tide" of incitements to violence, shouts of treason & traitor. Someone's gonna get shot, he says. All this in the last few weeks. This is the only response he hears to SNC-Lavalin. No legit concerns. Just wild-ass yahoos screaming treason 3/x
After citing concerned citizens as irresponsible yahoos, he trumps up a Senator's trite campaign metaphor -- roll over the opposition -- into an incitement of homicide reminiscent of last year's Danforth terror. (I think he meant the Yonge St incident but never mind) 4/x
He prejudge's an ongoing scandal saying reputations have been unfairly besmirched & lives ruined (I think he means Gerry), & he seems to have missed that this whole thing was triggered not by the wild-assed public or the mad senator but by a former Attorney General of Canada 5.x
And he circles back to the vomitorium of social media, in which he smells foreign influence, and suggests that its methods are infiltrating the mainstream media, as though reporters have no right to ask if an AG has come under undue political pressure 6/x
Then he upbraids his subjects for "losing faith" in our institutions of governance. I've seen no evidence in the last few weeks of any loss of faith in any institution aside from the Liberal party. 7/x
He seems to have missed or forgotten the sewer of bribes, unlawful campaign donations, apparent demotions & resignations that got us here. Him trying to sweep it all aside as fake news could not have been better calculated to make people lose faith in government. 8/x
In sum, this is the most intemperate, indecent, irresponsible, unfounded, addle-brained, and slanderous claptrap to emerge from the mouth of a public servant in my long observation. All, of course, in the service of defending civility...
