1. Her’s a theory: Barr may have seen the Iran-Contra affair as involving “good” people trying to accomplish a righteous thing (“arms for hostages” scam; funding the Contras who were battling to defeat the Sandinista rebels/socialist government in Nicaragua. . . .
2. Don’t misunderstand me, I believe that breaking the law to accomplish something that certain ideologues think is “good” or “necessary” is dead wrong. In fact, it’s unpatriotic. Still, if Barr thought those involved were trying to accomplish something “in the national interest”
3. That may explain why he supported mass pardons. I hasten to add that this prosecutor generally is troubled by pardons in principle. The same mitigators some may have seen in the Iran-Contra affair are not present here. Those dealing with Russia and lying about it . . .
4. Are involved in very different kind of crimes than were the Iran-Contra actors. I actually think Barr may see an opportunity to save the Republican Party from Trump (not to mention save the Republican Party from itself) by dislodging him from the presidency. Time will tell.
