1/6 Nobody asked for this from me 😬😎, but there has been a lot of discussion on how to preach the Bible...forever. So, this is what I subscribe to and it’s based on Zack Eswine’s book “Preaching to a Post Everything World.”
2/6 A sermon should tell 4 stories from the passage that preachers need to help unfold. So, in study and in sermons, seek to answer these 4 questions:
1. What is being made known in this passage about God?
3/6
2. Who is it being made known to and what do these original hearers/readers need to hear about God?
- sub categories (4) of possible things to be addressed:
- what sin is revealed that needs to be repented of?
- what wound needs to be brought to God, the Healer?
4/6
- what knowledge of God needs to be learned and understood?
- what blind spot, that we see in everyone else, needs to be applied to our own hearts?
3. What do we have in common with these original hearers/readers?
4. What do I need to hear about God from this passage?
5/6 This helps us see the Bible in its original context. This calls for cultural exegesis of previous cultures AS WELL AS our own culture. This helps reveal the KNOW (what has God done) the BE (who we now are) and the DO (what should we do in response to who we now are?).
6/6 This shows the Bible NOT as “basic instructions before leaving earth,” (which I believe to be a wrong view of the Bible) but as the grand story of who God is and what He has done and what our response to that should be.
