The Supreme Court's decision, taken after several inexplicable instances of listed-but-not-heard, to not hear the 11 MLA's disqualification case on an expedited basis - 2 YEARS AFTER THE EVENTS - marks an inflection point in the hollowing of India's Constitutional Democracy - 1/n
It is the culmination, days after the BJP-ADMK alliance was sealed, of many cases & instances since August 2016 where the judiciary has miserably failed in its duty to ensure the very essence of democracy - that TN's Govt's are run by representatives elected by citizens - 2/n
18 Constituencies haven't had an MLA for nearly 2 years, while a Govt. with less than 50% of the seats continues in power. The inequity is that 18 elected members were disqualified for their COMMENTS OUTSIDE the Assembly, while 11 who VOTED AGAINST TRUST in the Govt. continue 3/n
Local Body polls have not been held for over 2 years! So over 5.5 Crore voters have not had representation at the level of Govt. which effects their daily lives the most (water, sanitation, etc). When so many people are without representation for so long, is this Democracy? 4/n
At least as far as court records & judgments are concerned, history is an unwavering witness to events and their authors. I am a firm believer that India's best days are still ahead of us. These dark days of the ruthless assault on the essence of Democracy cannot last forever 5/n
It is the responsibility of all citizens to ensure that after the dawn, these dark days are chronicled in full detail, and used as a precautionary lesson for posterity. And the names of all the perpetrators, along with their fetid enablers, should live in ignominy forever 6/6
