🧵🌨 Evaporating Clouds (conflict resolution diagrams), a dialogue:
A: I hear you want to do X. Is that right?
B: Yes, I want to do X.
A: Hm, while I want to do Y, which is not X.
B: Yep, that does seem to be the disagreement. We can't X and Y at the same time.
A: Let's see if we can get into this further. What's good about X? Why do you want to do X?
B: Well, X meets my need of 1.
A: Interesting. I can appreciate that need. I want 1 too. It helps us in lots of ways.
B: Oh! That's a relief.
A: Yeah. Now, that makes me curious, do you have a sense of why I want Y, not X?
B: Well, I imagine you need 2.
A: Yeah, that's right.
B: Well, I can see the value of 2. It also helps us in lots of ways.
A: I notice that while X and Y are in conflict, 1 and 2 are not.
B: That's true! Hm.
A: Furthermore, 1 and 2 also serve the same root goal: 0.
B: Wow! It's like we're all on the same team here.
A: Yeah. We just have to decide whether to X or Y... but maybe there's a less black and white, either/or solution.
B: You might be right. But how can we find it? We really can't do both X and Y.
A: It's true, but is there a way we can meet need 1 without doing X? Or, can we meet need 2 without doing Y?
B: Well, now that you put it that way, we could implement α, β, or γ.
A: Wow! Those are great ideas! I hadn't thought of any of those, but those might just work! Which do you want to try?
B: Let's go with α for now, and if it doesn't work we can switch to β or γ.
A: Awesome! Let's do it!
