In addition to the "arbitration panel", which many have heard of, Cox presented the idea of a "mini backstop" to Barnier yesterday that would limit the mechanism to only cover elements that relate to border infrastructure, EU27 ambassadors were told today
Both ideas were rejected. Ambassadors were told that the UK is looking for ways to lower the bar to exit the backstop, seeking legal solutions to a political problem, and, in effect, still asking for a unilateral exit mechanism

EU27 ambassadors were told today that PM May told Tusk at their meeting in Sharm that the UK might need a short extension even if MPs back the withdrawal agreement, according to a note of the ambassadors meeting seen by @BuzzFeedNews
@BuzzFeedNews The 27 diplomats were also told that the chances of May getting her deal through parliament are slim. The EU reiterated its position, where it can help, that the backstop cannot be changed. Efforts by the UK to find alternatives are "fading away"

Britain’s post-Brexit trade conundrum. A short story.

I had a meeting this morning with a Japanese diplomat who said Japan doesn’t want to simply replicate the same terms of its EU FTA with the UK (as reported by the FT here: ft.com/content/5ce60a…).
The diplomat said the EU FTA was a good basis, but Japan wants the FTA with the UK to be “more ambitious.” Asked what he meant by this, and examples, they mentioned the UK liberalising rules and regulations in some areas once it leaves the EU
The diplomat also said the two sides has been exchanging views, but hadn’t yet started negotiations proper.

I did something similar to this 5 years ago, in anticipation of EC & @theroots' Wise Up Ghost LP, on tumblr.

(You can still find all those posts if you look, although a lot of the YouTube links etc are now dead ends. It was 40 Days Of EC then, so for 2018 I'm upping it to 45.)
Mostly I will be going chronologically from the early years right up to the present, but it feels right to start out with Costello's 2002 song, "45."

This is truly incredible news as we're gearing up for another great year. We'd be remiss not to pause and reflect on these accomplishments first, though. I was traveling when this year's scores were released, so I'm going to share some data and insight this weekend. (THREAD)
Student enrollment in AP courses at EHS over time --

Enrollment has steadily increased over the last 5 years, rising to a level in 2017-2018 that was at an all-time high in school history and represented a 71% increase over 5 years earlier (2013-2014 year).
Over the same 5-year span, the number of EHS AP students qualifying as AP Scholars has increased even more sharply.

The search warrant filed in Minneapolis federal court against Albury did not identify The Intercept, but the documents described in the warrant match the documents posted by The Intercept in January 2017. (2/6) theintercept.com/series/the-fbi…
The Intercept filed two FOIAs with the agency in late March 2016. The requests contained specific information about the documents that were not available to the public. The FBI determined that The Intercept "obtained these documents from someone with direct access to them." (3/6)

Pruitt thinning out EPA ranks is paying off for big polluters/mega donors like Koch industries. Number of cases filed against polluters by the Trump admin dropped drastically: There were 44% fewer cases opened under Trump than Obama in the first year of their administrations.
A look at how science advisory committees at various departments are being gutted, disbanded or ignored under Trump. FDA’s Science Board Meeting in December was held by phone, had no agenda, lasted < 15 mins. Same month, FDA’s 25-year-old Food Advisory Committee was disbanded.
Also in December 2017, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) received directives prohibiting the use of seven words in agency budget documents, including "diversity," "vulnerable," and "science-based."
